For Olga Evgenievna

I am very, very grateful to you, dear Olga Evgenievna, for your kind and sincere feelings toward me. I shall never forget your solicitous attitude toward me! I am looking forward to the moment when I shall be released from exile and, upon arriving in Petersburg, personally thank you and Sergei for everything. After all, I have only two years left to serve.

I received the parcel. Thank you. I ask only one thing -- do not spend any more on me: you need the money yourselves. I shall be content if from time to time you send me picture postcards with scenes of nature, etc. In this accursed land, nature is wretchedly barren -- in summer the river, in winter the snow; that is all that nature offers here -- and I am desperate to the point of absurdity for the sight of nature, even if only on paper.

My regards to the boys and girls. I wish them all the very best.

I am living as before. I feel well. My health is completely fine -- I must have grown accustomed to the local climate. And the climate here is harsh: about three weeks ago, the temperature dropped to 45 degrees below zero.

Until the next letter.

Respectfully yours,

Iosif.
