ORDER

OF THE SUPREME COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF

To Marshal of the Soviet Union Konev

The troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front, continuing their offensive, forced the River Stryi and today, 5 August, took by storm the city of Stryi — a major railway junction and important enemy defensive strongpoint in the foothills of the Carpathians.

In the fighting for the capture of the city of Stryi, distinction was won by the troops of Colonel-General Grechko, Lieutenant-General Sheverdin, Major-General Lazko, Major-General Gordeyev, Colonel Ivanchura, Colonel Gerasimov, Colonel Pakhomov, Colonel Yankovsky, Colonel Grinchenko; artillerymen of Major-General of Artillery Brichenko, Colonel Brozgol; tankmen of Major-General of Tank Troops Raikin, Lieutenant-Colonel Strelets; airmen of Colonel-General of Aviation Krasovsky; sappers of Major-General of Engineering Troops Tupichev; signallers of Colonel Belyanchik.

To commemorate the victory won, the formations and units which have distinguished themselves most in the fighting for the capture of the city of Stryi will be recommended for conferment of the honorary designation "Stryi" and for award of orders.

Today, 5 August, at 23.30 hours, the capital of our Motherland, Moscow, in the name of the Motherland, will salute the valiant troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front which have captured the city of Stryi with twelve artillery salvoes from one hundred and twenty-four guns.

For excellent military operations I express my thanks to the troops under your command who took part in the fighting for the liberation of the city of Stryi.

Eternal glory to the heroes who fell in the struggle for the freedom and independence of our Motherland!
