ORDER

OF THE SUPREME COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF

To Army General Tolbukhin

The troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front, developing their offensive, today, August 26, captured by storm the regional centre of Ukraine, the town and fortress of Izmail — an important strongpoint of the enemy defences on the lower Danube.

The following distinguished themselves in the fighting for the capture of the town and fortress of Izmail: the troops of Lieutenant General Shlemin, Major General Kolchuk, Lieutenant Colonel Zavyalov; the artillerymen of Colonel General of Artillery Nedelin, Colonel Trekhnov, Major Gorokhov; the tankmen of Lieutenant General of Armoured Forces Sukhoruchkin, Colonel Rumyantsev, Lieutenant Colonel Mukhin, Major Shevkin; the airmen of Colonel General of Aviation Sudets; the sappers of Major General of Engineering Troops Ignatov, Colonel Puzurevsky, Colonel Marenny; the signallers of Colonel Yegorov, Colonel Katkov.

In commemoration of the victory achieved, the formations and units which most distinguished themselves in the fighting for the capture of the town and fortress of Izmail are to be recommended for conferment of the designation "Izmail" and for award of orders.

Today, August 26, at 22:00 hours, the capital of our Motherland, Moscow, in the name of the Motherland salutes the valiant troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front which captured the town and fortress of Izmail with twenty artillery salvoes from two hundred and twenty-four guns.

For excellent military operations I express my gratitude to all the troops under your command who took part in the fighting for the liberation of Izmail.

Eternal glory to the heroes who fell in the struggle for the freedom and independence of our Motherland!
