ORDER

OF THE SUPREME COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF

To Colonel-General Petrov

The troops of the 4th Ukrainian Front, continuing their offensive, crossed the Carpathian Range and, capturing the passes — Lupkovsky, Russky, Uzhok, Veretsky, Vyshkovsky, Yablonitsky, Tatarsky — advanced into the depths of the territory of Czechoslovakia from 20 to 50 kilometres along a front of 275 kilometres.

In the course of the offensive, the troops of the Front captured the Czechoslovak towns of Korosmeze (Jasina) and Rakhov, and the large populated places of Chertizhnye, Belka, Polyana, Ruske, Lgota, Uzhok, Nizhni Veretsky, Zalomiska, Pilipets, Golyatin, Toruna, Nadbochko, and in Northern Transylvania captured the town of Sighet.

In the battles for the crossing of the Carpathians, distinction was won by the troops of Colonel-General Grechko, Lieutenant-General Zhuravlev, Major-General Gastilovich, Lieutenant-General Gordeyev, Major-General Lazko, Major-General Melnikov, Major-General Afonin, Major-General Vedenin, Major-General Bezhko, Major-General Yankovsky, Major-General Lisinov, Major-General Podshivalov, Major-General Frolov, Major-General Prokhorov, Major-General Dudarev, Major-General Koldubov, Major-General Umansky, Major-General Fadeyev, Colonel Dryakhlov, Colonel Batluk, Colonel Pakhomov, Colonel Novozhibov, Colonel Zherdienko, Colonel Chorny, Colonel Ugryumov, Colonel Vasilyev; artillerymen of Lieutenant-General of Artillery Kariofilli, Major-General of Artillery Brichenko, Major-General of Artillery Naidenko, Major-General of Artillery Tveretsky, Major-General of Artillery Zhiburkus, Colonel Sharapov, Colonel Yakovlev, Colonel Brozgol, Colonel Nikitin, Colonel Ponomartsev, Lieutenant-Colonel Filimonov, Lieutenant-Colonel Zaikin, Lieutenant-Colonel Silayev, Lieutenant-Colonel Gorbatenko, Major Pismerov, Major Kazakov, Lieutenant-Colonel Terekhin; tankmen of Major-General of Tank Troops Solovyev, Major-General of Tank Troops Raikin, Colonel Serov; airmen of Lieutenant-General of Aviation Zhdanov, Lieutenant-General of Aviation Naneyshvili, Major-General of Aviation Golovnya, Major-General of Aviation Kotelnikov, Major-General of Aviation Lakeyev, Major-General of Aviation Ukhov, Lieutenant-Colonel Yefremov, Lieutenant-Colonel Serikov; sappers of Major-General of Engineer Troops Kolesnikov, Colonel Davidenko, Colonel Govorov, Colonel Zhurin, Lieutenant-Colonel Naumov, Colonel Barash; signallers of Lieutenant-General of Signal Troops Matveyev.

To commemorate the victory achieved, the units and formations which particularly distinguished themselves in the battles for the crossing of the Carpathians shall be recommended for conferment of the designation "Carpathian" and for the award of orders.

Today, October 18, at 22:00 hours, the capital of our Motherland, Moscow, in the name of the Motherland salutes the valiant troops of the 4th Ukrainian Front who crossed the Carpathians, with twenty artillery salvoes from two hundred and twenty-four guns.

For excellent combat operations I express my thanks to the troops under your command who took part in the battles for the crossing of the Carpathians.

Eternal glory to the heroes who fell in the battles for the freedom and independence of our Motherland!
