I understand the difficulty of your position after the liberation of Belgrade. You cannot but know that the Soviet government, despite colossal sacrifices and losses, does everything possible and even impossible to help you. But I am struck by the fact that individual incidents and mistakes of individual officers and soldiers of the Red Army are being generalized by you and extended to the entire Red Army. One cannot so insult an army that is helping you drive out the Germans and is shedding its blood in battles with the German invaders.

It is not difficult to understand that a family is not without its black sheep, but it would be strange to insult the family on account of one black sheep. If the Red Army soldiers were to learn that Djilas and those who did not object to him consider British officers morally superior to Soviet officers, they would howl from such an undeserved offense.
