The mighty giant—the proletariat of all Russia—is stirring again. . . . Russia is in the throes of a broad, country-wide strike movement. All over the boundless expanse of Russia life has come to a standstill as if by the wave of a magic wand. In St. Petersburg alone and on its railways, over a million workers have gone on strike. Moscow—the old, tranquil, sluggish capital, faithful to the Romanovs—is completely enveloped in a revolutionary conflagration. Kharkov, Kiev, Yekaterinoslav and other cultural and industrial centres, the whole of central and south Russia, the whole of Poland and, lastly, the whole of the Caucasus, have come to a standstill and are threateningly looking the autocracy straight-in the face.
What is going to happen? The whole of Russia is waiting with bated breath for an answer to this question. The proletariat is hurling a challenge at the accursed two-headed monster. Will this challenge be followed by a real clash, will the strike develop into an open, armed uprising, or will it, like previous strikes, end “peacefully” and “subside”? Citizens! Whatever the answer to this question may be, in whichever way the present strike ends, one thing must be clear and beyond doubt to all: we are on the eve of an all-Russian, nation-wide uprising—and I he hour of this uprising is near. The general political strike now raging—of dimensions unprecedented and unexampled not only in the history of Russia but in the history of the whole world—may, perhaps, end today without developing into a nation-wide uprising, but tomorrow it will shake the country again with even greater force and develop into that mighty armed uprising which must settle the age-long contest between the Russian people and the tsarist autocracy and smash the head of this despicable monster.
A nation-wide armed uprising—that is the fateful climax to which all the events that have recently taken place in the political and social life of our country are leading with historical inevitability! A nation-wide armed uprising—such is the great task that today confronts the proletariat of Russia and is imperatively demanding execution!
Citizens! It is in the interests of all of you, except the handful of financial and landed aristocrats, to join in the rallying cry of the proletariat and to strive jointly with it to bring about this all-saving, nation-wide uprising.
The criminal tsarist autocracy has brought our country to the brink of doom. The ruination of a hundred million Russian peasants, the downtrodden and distressed condition of the working class, the excessive national debt and burdensome taxes, the lack of rights of the entire population, the endless tyranny and violence that reign in all spheres of life, and lastly, the utter insecurity of the lives and property of the citizens—such is the frightful picture that Russia presents today. This cannot go on much longer! The autocracy, which has caused all these grim horrors, must be destroyed! And it will be destroyed! The autocracy realises this, and the more it realises it the more grim these horrors become, the more frightful becomes the hellish dance which it is whipping up around itself. In addition to the hundreds and thousands of peaceful citizens—workers whom it has killed in the streets of towns, in addition to the tens of thousands of workers and intellectuals, the best sons of the people, whom it has sent to languish in prison and in exile, in addition to the incessant murders and violence perpetrated by the tsar’s bashi-bazouks in the countryside, among the peasantry all over Russia—and finally, the autocracy has invented new horrors. It has begun to sow enmity and hatred among the people themselves and to incite different strata of the population and whole nationalities against each other. It has armed and unleashed Russian hooligans against the Russian workers and intellectuals, the unenlightened and starving masses of Russians and Moldavians in Bessarabia against the Jews, and lastly, the ignorant and fanatical Tatar masses against the Armenians. With the assistance of Tatars it has demolished one of the revolutionary centres of Russia and the most revolutionary centre of the Caucasus—Baku—and has frightened the whole of the Armenian province away from the revolution. It has converted the entire Caucasus with its numerous tribes into a military camp where the population anticipates attack at any moment not only by the autocracy, but also by neighbouring tribes, the unfortunate victims of the autocracy. This cannot go on any longer! And only revolution can put a stop to it!
It would be strange and ridiculous to expect the autocracy, which created all these hellish horrors, to be willing, or able, to stop them. No reform, no patching of the autocracy—such as a State Duma, Zemstvos, and so forth, to which the liberal party wishes to limit itself—can put a stop to these horrors. On the contrary, every attempt in this direction, and every resistance to the revolutionary impulses of the proletariat, will only serve to intensify these horrors.
Citizens! The proletariat, the most revolutionary class in our society, the class which has up to now borne the brunt of the struggle against the autocracy, and which will remain to the end its most determined and unrelenting enemy, is preparing for open, armed action. And it calls upon you, all classes of society, for assistance and support. Arm yourselves and help it to arm, and prepare for the decisive battle.
Citizens! The hour of the uprising is near! We must meet it fully armed! Only if we do that, only by means of a general, country-wide and simultaneous armed uprising will we be able to vanquish our despicable foe—the accursed tsarist autocracy—and on its ruins erect the free democratic republic that we need.

Могучий великан – всероссийский пролетариат вновь зашевелился... Россия охвачена
широким повсеместным стачечным движением. Как по мановению волшебного жезла, на
всем необъятном пространстве России жизнь сразу остановилась. В одном Петербурге
с его железными дорогами забастовало более миллиона рабочих. Москва – тихая,
недвижная, верная Романовым старая столица – вся охвачена революционным пожаром.
Харьков, Киев, Екатеринослав и прочие культурные и промышленные центры, вся
средняя и южная Россия, вся Польша и, наконец, весь Кавказ остановились и грозно
смотрят в глаза самодержавию.
Что будет? С трепетом и с замиранием сердца ждет вся Россия ответа на этот
вопрос. Пролетариат бросает вызов проклятому двуглавому чудовищу. Последует ли
за этим вызовом действительная схватка, перейдет ли стачка в открытое
вооруженное восстание или, подобно прежним стачкам, “мирно” закончится и
“затихнет”?
Граждане! Каков бы ни был ответ на этот вопрос, как бы ни кончилась настоящая
стачка, одно должно быть ясно и несомненно для всех: мы находимся накануне
всероссийского всенародного восстания – час этого восстания близок. Небывалая,
беспримерная по своей грандиозности не только в истории России, но и всего мира,
всеобщая политическая стачка, разыгравшаяся теперь, может, пожалуй, закончиться
сегодня, не вылившись во всенародное восстание, но это лишь с тем, чтобы завтра
снова и с большей силой потрясти страну и вылиться в то грандиозное вооруженное
восстание, которое должно разрешить вековую тяжбу русского народа с царским
самодержавием и размозжить голову этому гнусному чудовищу.
Всенародное вооруженное восстание – вот та роковая развязка, к которой с
исторической неизбежностью ведет вся совокупность событий политической и
общественной жизни нашей страны за последнее время! Всенародное вооруженное
восстание – вот та великая задача, которая стоит в настоящее время перед
российским пролетариатом и властно требует своего разрешениям
Граждане! В ваших интересах, за исключением горсти финансовой и земельной
аристократии, присоединиться к призывному кличу пролетариата и стремиться вместе
с ним к этому спасительному всенародному восстанию.
Преступное царское самодержавие привело нашу страну на край гибели. Разорение
стомиллионного российского крестьянства, угнетенное и бедственное положение
рабочего класса, непомерные государственные долги и тяжелые налоги, бесправие
всего населения, бесконечный произвол и насилие, царящие во всех сферах жизни,
наконец, полнейшая необеспеченность жизни и имущества граждан – вот та страшная
картина, которую представляет теперь Россия. Так долго продолжаться не может!
Самодержавие, создавшее все эти мрачные ужасы, должно быть уничтожено! И оно
будет уничтожено! Самодержавие сознает это, и чем больше оно это сознает, тем
мрачнее становятся эти ужасы, тем страшнее делается та адская пляска, которую
оно устраивает вокруг себя. Кроме тех сотен и тысяч мирных граждан – рабочих,
которых оно убивало на улицах городов, кроме десятков тысяч рабочих и
интеллигентов, лучших сынов народа, изнывающих в тюрьмах и в ссылке, кроме тех
непрерывных убийств и насилий, которые производятся царскими башибузуками в
деревнях, среди крестьянства, на всем протяжении России, – самодержавие
придумало под конец новые ужасы. Оно стало сеять вражду и злобу среди самого
народа и поднимать друг против друга отдельные слои населения и целые
национальности. Оно вооружило и напустило русских хулиганов на русских рабочих и
интеллигентов, темные и голодные массы русских и молдаван в Бессарабии против
евреев и, наконец, невежественную и фанатическую татарскую массу на армян. Оно
разгромило при помощи татар один из революционных центров России и самый
революционный центр Кавказа – Баку и отпугнуло от революции всю армянскую
провинцию. Оно превратило весь многоплеменный Кавказ в военный лагерь, где
население каждую минуту ждет нападения не только со стороны самодержавия, но и
со стороны соседних племен, этих несчастных жертв самодержавия. Так продолжаться
не может! И конец всему этому может положить только революция!
Было бы странно и смешно ожидать, что самодержавие, которое создало все эти
адские ужасы, само пожелает и сможет прекратить их. Никакие реформы, никакие
заплатки на самодержавии – вроде Государственной думы, земств и пр., – которыми
хочет ограничиться либеральная партия, не могут положить конец этим ужасам.
Наоборот, всякие попытки в этом направлении и противодействие революционным
порывам пролетариата будут способствовать усилению этих ужасов.
Граждане! Пролетариат, самый революционный класс нашего общества, на своих
плечах вынесший всю борьбу с самодержавием до настоящего времени, и самый
решительный и беззаветный противник его до конца, готовится к открытому
вооруженному выступлению. И он призывает вас, все классы общества, к помощи и
поддержке. Вооружайтесь, помогайте ему вооружиться и готовьтесь к решительному
бою.
Граждане! Час восстания близок! Необходимо, чтобы мы встретили его во всеоружии!
Только в таком случае, только при помощи всеобщего, повсеместного и
одновременного вооруженного восстания мы сможем победить нашего гнусного врага –
проклятое царское самодержавие – и на его развалинах воздвигнуть необходимую нам
свободную демократическую республику.
Долой самодержавие!
Да здравствует всеобщее вооруженное восстание!
Да здравствует демократическая республика!
Да здравствует борющийся российский пролетариат!

El poderoso titán, el proletariado de Rusia, de nuevo se pone en pie... Un vasto movimiento huelguístico abarca toda Rusia. Como por obra de magia, ha quedado repentinamente paralizada la vida en todo el inmenso territorio de Rusia. Sólo en Petersburgo y en su red ferroviaria se han declarado en huelga más de un millón de obreros. El incendio revolucionario se ha extendido a todo Moscú, la antigua capital tranquila, inmóvil, fiel a los Románov. Járkov, Kiev, Ekaterinoslav y otros centros culturales e industriales, toda la Rusia central y meridional, toda Polonia y, por último, todo el Cáucaso han paralizado sus actividades y miran cara a cara, con aire amenazador, a la autocracia. ¿Qué sucederá? Estremecida y con el corazón en suspenso aguarda toda Rusia contestación a esta pregunta. El proletariado lanza un reto al maldito monstruo bicéfalo. ¿Seguirá a este reto una verdadera batalla, se convertirá la huelga en franca insurrección armada o, a semejanza de las huelgas anteriores, terminará “pacíficamente”, se “extinguirá”? ¡Ciudadanos! Cualquiera que sea la contestación a esta pregunta, termine de una u otra manera la huelga actual, una cosa debe ser clara e indudable para todos: nos encontramos en vísperas de la insurrección de todo el pueblo de Rusia, y la hora de esta insurrección se halla cercana. La huelga general política que acaba de desencadenarse, huelga sin precedente y de grandiosidad sin igual, no sólo en la historia de Rusia, sino incluso en la historia del mundo entero, puede quizá terminar hoy sin convertirse en una insurrección de todo el pueblo, pero será tan sólo para conmocionar mañana de nuevo al país con mayor fuerza y transformarse en la grandiosa insurrección armada que debe dirimir el pleito secular del pueblo ruso con la autocracia zarista y aplastar la cabeza a este monstruo abominable. La insurrección armada de todo el pueblo: ¡ése es el desenlace fatal a que lleva con inevitabilidad histórica todo el conjunto de los acontecimientos ocurridos en la vida política y social de nuestro país durante estos últimos tiempos! La insurrección armada de todo el pueblo: ¡ése es el gran problema que está planteado en el momento actual ante el proletariado de Rusia y que reclama imperiosamente solución! ¡Ciudadanos! Vuestros intereses, a excepción de los intereses del pequeño grupo de la aristocracia financiera y agraria, reclaman que os adhiráis al llamamiento del proletariado y vayáis con él a esta salvadora insurrección de todo el pueblo. La criminal autocracia zarista ha llevado a nuestro país al borde del abismo. La ruina de los cien millones de campesinos de Rusia, la opresión y la miseria de la clase obrera, las enormes deudas del Estado y los impuestos agobiadores, la falta de derechos de toda la población, la arbitrariedad sin límites y los atropellos que reinan en todos los dominios de la vida y, en fin, la falta absoluta de seguridad para la vida y los bienes de los ciudadanos: tal es el terrible panorama que ofrece ahora Rusia. ¡Así no se puede continuar por mucho tiempo! ¡La autocracia, que ha creado todos estos sombríos horrores, debe ser aniquilada! ¡Y lo será! La autocracia se da cuenta de ello, y cuanto más se percata tanto más sombríos son estos horrores, tanto más terrible es la danza infernal que organiza alrededor suyo. Además de los centenares y millares de ciudadanos pacíficos, de obreros, que ha asesinado en las calles de las ciudades; además de las decenas de millares de obreros e intelectuales, los mejores hijos del pueblo, que padecen en las cárceles y en el destierro; además de las interminables matanzas y desmanes que cometen los jenízaros zaristas en las aldeas, entre los campesinos, en todo el territorio de Rusia, la autocracia ha discurrido, por último, nuevos horrores. Ha comenzado a sembrar la enemistad y el encono entre el pueblo mismo y a enfrentar a las distintas capas de la población y a nacionalidades enteras. Ha armado y azuzado a elementos rusos del hampa contra los obreros y los intelectuales rusos, a las masas atrasadas y hambrientas de rusos y moldavos en Besarabia contra los judíos y, en fin, a la masa ignorante y fanática de tártaros contra los armenios. Utilizando a los tártaros ha aplastado Bakú, uno de los centros revolucionarios de Rusia y el centro más revolucionario del Cáucaso, y ha apartado de la revolución a toda la provincia armenia. Ha convertido íntegramente el multinacional Cáucaso en un campamento militar, donde la población espera cada momento verse atacada no sólo por la autocracia, sino también por las nacionalidades vecinas, víctimas infelices de la autocracia. ¡Así no se puede continuar! ¡Y sólo la revolución puede poner fin a todo ello! Sería peregrino y ridículo esperar que la autocracia, que ha creado todos estos infernales horrores, quiera y pueda ella misma ponerles fin. No hay reformas, no hay remiendos puestos a la autocracia -como la Duma de Estado, los zemstvos,
etc., que es a lo que quiere limitarse el partido liberal- capaces determinar con estos horrores. Por el contrario, todas las tentativas en este sentido, así como toda oposición al ímpetu revolucionario del proletariado, contribuirán a la exacerbación de tales horrores. ¡Ciudadanos! El proletariado, la clase más revolucionaría de nuestra sociedad, que ha sostenido hasta el presente sobre sus espaldas todo el peso de la lucha contra la autocracia, y que es su enemigo más decidido e implacable hasta el final, se dispone a la insurrección armada. Y os llama a vosotros, llama a todas las clases de la sociedad, a ayudarle y apoyarle. Armaos, ayudadle a armarse y preparaos para el combate decisivo. ¡Ciudadanos! ¡La hora de la insurrección está cerca! ¡Es preciso que nos encuentre bien pertrechados! Sólo en tal caso, sólo por medio de la insurrección armada general, desencadenada al mismo tiempo y en todas partes, podremos vencer a nuestro vil enemigo -la maldita autocracia zarista- y erigir sobre sus escombros la república democrática libre que necesitamos. ¡Abajo la autocracia! ¡Viva la insurrección armada general! ¡Viva la república democrática! ¡Viva el proletariado de Rusia en lucha!
