The “publicists” of Lakhvari are still unable to define their tactics. In their first issue they wrote: We are supporting only the “progressive steps” of the Cadets, but not the Cadets themselves. Commenting on this we said that it was amusing sophistry, since the Mensheviks voted for the Cadet candidates to the Duma and not only for their “steps”; they helped to get into the Duma Cadets as such and not only their “steps,” and they helped to elect a Cadet as such as President of the Duma and not only his “steps”—and this clearly confirms the fact that the Mensheviks supported the Cadets. This is so obvious and the Mensheviks have talked so much about supporting the Cadets, that denial of the fact has only raised a laugh. . . .
Now, having “pondered” over the matter a little, they are talking differently: true, “during the elections we supported the Cadets” (see Lakhvari, No. 3), but this was only during the elections; in the Duma we are supporting not the Cadets but only their “steps”; you, they say, “do not distinguish between tactics in the Duma and tactics during elections.” In the first place, “tactics” which safeguard you from doing stupid things only in the Duma but prompt you to do stupid things during elections are very funny tactics. Secondly, is it not true that the Mensheviks helped to elect a Cadet as President of the Duma? Under what category of tactics should we place helping to elect a Cadet as President—“tactics in the Duma” or tactics outside the Duma? We think that Golovin was elected President of the Duma in the Duma, and not president of the street in the street.
Clearly, the Mensheviks pursued the same tactics in the Duma as they pursued outside the Duma. These are the tactics of supporting the Cadets. If they deny it now, it is because they have fallen victims to muddle. Supporting the Cadets does not mean creating a reputation for the Cadets; if it does, then you are creating a reputation for the Socialist-Revolutionaries by supporting them—says Lakhvari. What comical fellows those “Lakhvarists” are! Apparently it does not occur to them that any support that Social-Democracy lends a party creates a reputation for that party! That is why they have been so lavish in their promises of every kind of “support.” . . . Yes, dear comrades, by supporting the Socialist-Revolutionaries, Social-Democracy creates a reputation for them in the eyes of the people, and this is exactly why such support is permissible only in exceptional cases, and as a means of defeating the Cadets. Supporting the Socialist-Revolutionaries is by no means ideal, it is an inevitable evil, resorted to in order to curb the Cadets. You, however, supported the very Cadets who are betraying the workers and peasants; the Socialist-Revolutionaries are superior to them because they side with the revolution. . . . “The Cadets, for example, demanded universal suffrage. It turns out that this demand is a great evil, because it is a Cadet demand” (ibid.).
Well, aren’t they comical? You see, it turns out that universal suffrage is a “Cadet demand”! The Tiflis Mensheviks, it turns out, do not know that universal suffrage is not a Cadet demand, but the demand of revolutionary democracy, which Social-Democracy advocates more consistently than anyone else! No, comrades, if you cannot even understand that the Cadets are not revolutionary democrats; if you cannot even understand that the fight against them in order to strengthen the hegemony of the proletariat is the question of the day for us; if you cannot even distinguish between what you said yesterday and what you are saying today—then you had better put your pens aside, get yourselves out of the muddle you are in, and only after that launch into “criticism.” . . . By the holy Duma, that would be better!

Все еще никак не определят своей тактики “публицисты” из “Лахвари”[30]. В первом
номере они писали: мы, дескать, поддерживаем только “прогрессивные шаги”
кадетов, а не самих кадетов. Мы заметили, что это забавный софизм, так как
меньшевики голосовали за избираемых в Думу кадетов, а не только за их “шаги”;
они проводили в Думу кадетов как таковых, а не только их “шаги”; они провели в
председатели Думы кадета как такового, а не только его “шаги”, – что явно
подтверждает факт поддержки кадетов меньшевиками. Это так ясно, меньшевики так
много говорили о поддержке кадетов, что отрицание этого факта вызывало только
смех…
Теперь они чуточку “призадумались” и твердят другое: правда, “на выборах мы
поддерживали кадетов” (см. “Лахвари” № 3), но это только на выборах, зато в Думе
мы поддерживаем не кадетов, а только их “шаги”, вы же, дескать, “не отличаете
тактики в Думе от тактики на выборах”. Во-первых, очень смешна та “тактика”,
которая только в Думе предохраняет тебя от глупости, а во время выборов
подсказывает тебе глупости. Во-вторых, разве не правда, что председателем Думы
меньшевики провели кадета? К какой тактике надо отнести проведение председателем
кадета: к “тактике в Думе” или к тактике вне Думы? Мы думаем, что Головина в
Думе провели председателем Думы, а не на улице – председателем улицы.
Ясно, что и в Думе меньшевики проводили ту же тактику, что и вне Думы. Эта
тактика есть тактика поддержки кадетов. Если теперь они это отрицают, то это
потому, что стали жертвой неразберихи.
Поддерживать кадетов – это не значит создавать имя кадетам, в противном случае и
вы создаете имя эсерам, поддерживая их, – заявляет “Лахвари”. Шутники эти
“лахваристы”! Им, оказывается, невдомек, что всякая поддержка со стороны
социал-демократии создает имя той партии, которую она поддерживает! Потому они
так щедро и раздавали обещания о всевозможной “поддержке”… Да, любезные
товарищи, поддерживая эсеров, социал-демократия создает эсерам имя в глазах
народа, и именно поэтому такая поддержка допустима только как исключение и как
средство поражения кадетов. Поддержка эсеров – вовсе не идеал, она есть
неизбежное зло, используемое для обуздания кадетов. Вы же поддерживали как раз
тех самых кадетов, которые продают рабочих и крестьян, перед которыми эсеры
имеют то преимущество, что они примыкают к революции…
“Скажем, кадеты потребовали всеобщего избирательного права. Это, оказывается,
есть большое зло, ибо это требование кадетское” (см. там же).
Ну и шутники! Видите ли, всеобщее избирательное право – это, оказывается,
“кадетское требование”! Тифлисские меньшевики, оказывается, не знают, что
всеобщее избирательное право есть требование не кадетское, а требование
революционной демократии, которое последовательнее всех отстаивает
социал-демократия! Нет, товарищи, если вы не можете понять даже того, что кадеты
не являются революционными демократами; если вы не можете понять даже того, что
борьба с ними, чтобы укрепить гегемонию пролетариата – для нас вопрос дня; если
вы не в состоянии разобраться даже в том, что говорили вчера и что говорите
сегодня, – то лучше вам пока отложить перо, выпутаться сперва из неразберихи и
только после этого взяться за “критику”…
Клянемся Думой, так будет лучше…

Hasta ahora no hay manera de que definan su táctica los “publicistas” de “Lajvari”29. En el primer número escribían que apoyaban solamente los “pasos progresivos” de los demócratas constitucionalistas, y no a los propios demócratas constitucionalistas. Hemos observado que éste es un donoso sofisma, pues los mencheviques votaron por los demócratas constitucionalistas en las elecciones a la Duma, y no sólo por sus “pasos”; llevaron a la Duma a los demócratas constitucionalistas como tales, y no sólo a sus “pasos”; llevaron a la presidencia de la Duma a un demócrata constitucionalista como tal, y no sólo a los “pasos” de éste, lo que confirma bien claramente que los mencheviques han apoyado a los demócratas constitucionalistas. Esto es tan claro, los mencheviques han hablado tanto del apoyo a los demócratas constitucionalistas, que la negación de este hecho no ha suscitado más que risas... Ahora han “recapacitado” un poco y afirman otra cosa: es verdad que “en las elecciones apoyamos a los demócratas constitucionalistas” (v. “Lajvari”, núm. 3), pero esto fue tan sólo en las elecciones; en cambio, en la Duma no los apoyamos a ellos, sino tan sólo a sus “pasos”; vosotros, dicen, “no distinguís la táctica aplicada en la Duma de la seguida en las elecciones”. En primer lugar, es muy ridícula esa “táctica” que sólo preserva de las tonterías en la Duma, pero que durante las elecciones hace cometerlas. En segundo lugar, ¿acaso no es verdad que los mencheviques han llevado a la presidencia de la Duma a un demócrata constitucionalista? ¿A qué táctica corresponde esto: a la “táctica aplicada en la Duma” o a la táctica seguida fuera de ella? Nosotros creemos que Golovín fue elegido en la Duma presidente de la Duma, y no en la calle presidente de la calle. Es claro que en la Duma los mencheviques han seguido la misma táctica que fuera de la Duma. Esta táctica es la de apoyar a los demócratas constitucionalistas. Si ahora lo niegan, es porque se han hecho un lío. Apoyar a los demócratas constitucionalistas no significa crearles reputación; pues, de lo contrario, también vosotros creáis reputación a los eseristas cuando los apoyáis, declara “Lajvari”. ¡Qué bromistas son estos “lajvaristas”! ¡Resulta que no se dan cuenta de que todo apoyo por parte de la socialdemocracia crea reputación al partido al que ella apoya! Por eso han prodigado tanto las promesas de toda clase de “apoyo”... Sí, amables camaradas, apoyando a los eseristas, la socialdemocracia les prestigia a los ojos del pueblo, y precisamente por ello ese apoyo es permisible sólo como excepción y como un medio para derrotar a los demócratas constitucionalistas. El apoyo a los eseristas no es en modo alguno un ideal, sino un mal inevitable, que se sufre para poner freno a los demócratas constitucionalistas. Vosotros, en cambio, habéis apoyado precisamente a esos mismos demócratas constitucionalistas, que venden a los obreros y a los campesinos y sobre quienes los eseristas tienen la ventaja de haberse adherido a la revolución… “Supongamos que los demócratas constitucionalistas hayan exigido el sufragio universal. Resulta que es esto un gran mal, por tratarse de una reivindicación de los demócratas constitucionalistas” (ídem). ¡Pero qué bromistas! ¡Resulta que el sufragio universal es una “reivindicación de los demócratas constitucionalistas”! ¡Los mencheviques de Tiflis ignoran, como veis, que el sufragio universal no es una reivindicación de los demócratas constitucionalistas, sino una reivindicación de la democracia revolucionaria que la socialdemocracia defiende más consecuentemente que nadie! No, camaradas, si vosotros no podéis comprender siquiera que los demócratas constitucionalistas no son demócratas revolucionarios; si no podéis comprender siquiera que la lucha contra ellos, para fortalecer la hegemonía del proletariado, es para nosotros la tarea del día; si no estáis siquiera en condiciones de coordinar lo que habéis dicho ayer con lo que decís hoy, mejor será que dejéis por el momento la pluma y no emprendáis la “crítica” hasta no haber salido del embrollo en que estáis metidos... Juramos por la Duma que esto será mejor...
