To the Editorial Board of Proletary
1) Your recent letter with addresses has been received. The previous one (three weeks ago), also with addresses, was received through To-ze [Toroshelidze -- Ed.]. Due to the circumstances of provocation here and for certain other reasons, we could not reply. But now everything has settled down.
Your annotation to our resolution on the disagreements in the enlarged editorial board of Proletary (No. 49 of Proletary), as well as the "conversation with the St. Petersburg Bolsheviks," have further convinced us of the incorrectness of the editorial board's organizational policy. If Comrade Maks himself "broke away" by his insubordination, then so much the worse for him and the "School" -- all the more inappropriate was it for the editorial board to speak of "expulsion," etc. One of two things: 1) either joint work is harmful in principle and inadmissible, and in that case, without waiting for a break, one should have expelled them (the minority) from the editorial board outright; 2) or joint work is admissible, and in that case the "whole question" reduces to the question of the behavior of Comrade Maks and the "School." But the editorial board, depending on circumstances, proceeds from both points of view, which is, of course, inadmissible. In our opinion, if one takes a calm view of the pretensions to leadership of certain "Leftists" like Aleksinsky and pays no attention to them at all; if one proceeds not from their pretensions but from the existence of a not inconsiderable circle of ultimatist-addled practical workers and "advanced" workers, then it can be seen that joint work is admissible and necessary. Your organizational policy merely promotes the rapid grouping of workers who have not yet sorted things out around the Aleksinskys; it drives the Aleksinskys into a separate center and certain workers toward that center. We understand the position of the editorial board abroad, the atmosphere abroad, etc. But you must understand that we are not abroad; you write for us, and what is expedient abroad is not always expedient for Russia.
2) We think that a conference of the Beks [Bolsheviks], of course running parallel to the general party conference, would be able to put a rein on the Maksimovs. The later the conference, the less light there is -- the better for them, the worse for the faction: delay would give them the opportunity and time to organize, to cut off the path of Russian (addled) comrades to joint work, which (note this!) inevitably blows all the ultimatist dust out of their heads.
Therefore, a speedy conference of the Beks would be the way out.

1) Ваше недавнее письмо с адресами получено. Получено также предыдущее (3 недели назад) тоже с адресами через То-зе (Торошелидзе. —

). По обстоятельствам провокации у нас и некоторым другим не могли ответить. Но теперь все улеглось.
Ваша приписка к нашей резолюции о разногласиях в расширенной редакции “Пролетария” (№ 49 “Пролетария”), а также “беседа с Петербургскими большевиками” еще больше убедили нас в неправильности организационной политики редакции. Если т. Макс сам “откололся” своим неподчинением, то хуже для него и “Школы”, тем неуместнее было говорить редакции об “извергании” и т. д. Одно из двух: 1) либо совместная работа принципиально вредна и недопустима, и тогда, не дожидаясь откола, надо было самим выкинуть их (меньшинство) из редакции: 2) либо совместная работа допустима, и тогда “весь вопрос” сводится к вопросу о поведении т. Макс-ва и “Школы”. Редакция же, не смотря по обстоятельствам, исходит и с той и с другой точки зрения, что, конечно, недопустимо. По нашему мнению, если спокойно посмотреть на лидерские потуги некоторых “левых” вроде Алексинского и даже не обращать на них внимания, если исходить не из их потуг, а из наличности немалочисленного круга ультиматски-свихнувшихся практиков и “передовых” рабочих, то можно увидеть, что совместная работа допустима и необходима. Ваша же организационная политика способствует лишь скорой группировке не разобравшихся еще рабочих вокруг Алексинских, она гонит Алексинских в особый центр, а известных рабочих — к этому центру. Мы понимаем положение редакции за границей, заграничную атмосферу и т. д. Но должны понять, что мы не за границей, что вы пишете для нас и целесообразное для заграницы не всегда целесообразно для России.
2) Мы думаем, что конференция беков, конечно, параллельная конференция общепартийной, смогла бы наложить узду на максимовых. Чем позднее конференция, чем меньше света — тем лучше для них, тем хуже для фракции: оттягивание дало бы им возможность и время организоваться, отрезать путь русским (свихнувшимся) товарищам к совместной работе, которая (это заметьте) неизбежно выветривает у них из головы всю ультиматистскую пыль.
Поэтому скорая конференция беков была бы выход.

Pero la junta editorial, dependiendo de las circunstancias, procede desde ambos puntos de vista, lo cual es, por supuesto, inadmisible. En nuestra opinión, si uno toma una visión calmada de las pretensiones de liderazgo de ciertos "izquierdistas" como Aleksinsky y no les presta atención en absoluto; si uno procede no de sus pretensiones sino de la existencia de un círculo no inconsiderable de trabajadores prácticos confundidos por el ultimatumismo y trabajadores "avanzados," entonces se puede ver que el trabajo conjunto es admisible y necesario. 2) Pensamos que una conferencia de los Beks [bolcheviques], por supuesto corriendo en paralelo con la conferencia general del partido, sería capaz de poner un freno a los Maksimovs. Cuanto más tarde la conferencia, menos luz hay -- mejor para ellos, peor para la facción: el retraso les daría la oportunidad y el tiempo de organizarse, de cortar el camino de los camaradas rusos (confundidos) al trabajo conjunto, lo cual (¡note esto!) inevitablemente expulsa todo el polvo ultimatista de sus cabezas.
