Comrade Semyon! Yesterday I received your letter from the comrades. First of all, hearty greetings to Lenin and the others. Next about your letter and, in general, about the “vexed questions.”
In my opinion, the line of the bloc (Lenin-Plekhanov) is the only correct one: 1) this line, and it alone, answers to the real interests of the work in Russia, which demand that all real Party elements should rally together; 2) this line, and it alone, will expedite the process of emancipation of the legal organisations from the yoke of the Liquidators, by digging a gulf between the Menshevik workers and the Liquidators, and dispersing and disposing of the latter. A fight for influence in the legal organisations is the burning question of the day, a necessary stage on the road towards the regeneration of the Party; and a bloc is the only means by which these organisations can be cleansed of the garbage of Liquidationism. The plan for a bloc reveals the hand of Lenin—he is a shrewd fellow, and knows a thing or two. But this does not mean that any kind of bloc is good. A Trotsky bloc (he would have said “synthesis”) would be rank unprincipledness, a Manilov amalgam of heterogeneous principles, the helpless longing of an unprincipled person for a “good” principle. The logic of things, by its nature, adheres strictly to principle and abhors an amalgam. A Lenin-Plekhanov bloc is practical because it is thoroughly based on principle, on unity of views on the question of how to regenerate the Party. But precisely because it is a bloc and not a merger—precisely for that reason, the Bolsheviks must have their own group. It is quite possible that in the course of their work the Bolsheviks will completely tame the Plekhanovites, but that is only a possibility. At all events, we must not go to sleep and wait for such a result, even if it is a very probable one. The more unitedly the Bolsheviks act, the more organised they are in their actions, the greater will be the chances of taming. We must, therefore, tirelessly hammer away on all anvils. I shall say nothing about the Vperyod-ists, because they are now of less interest than the Liquidators and the Plekhanovites. If they do wake up one of these days—all to the good, of course; but if not—well, never mind, let them stew in their own juice.
That is what I think about things abroad.
But that is not all, nor even the most important. The most important thing is to organise the work in Russia. The history of our Party shows that disagreements are ironed out not in debates, but mainly in the course of the work, in the course of applying principles. Hence, the task of the day is to organise work in Russia around a strictly defined principle. The Liquidators at once realised what was in the wind (their scent is highly developed) and have begun to penetrate (have already penetrated) the legal workers’ organisations, and it

appears that they already have their underground centre in Russia, which is directing, etc., the work. We, however, are still only “preparing,” still in the stage of rehearsals. In my opinion, our immediate task, the one that brooks no delay, is to organise a central group (in Russia), to co-ordinate the illegal, semi-legal and legal work at first in the main centres (St. Petersburg, Moscow, the Urals, the South). Call it what you like—the “Russian section of the Central Committee” or auxiliary group of the Central Committee—it makes no difference, but such a group is as essential as air, as bread. At the present time lack of information, loneliness and isolation reign among the Party workers in the localities and they are all becoming discouraged. This group could give fresh stimulus to the work and introduce clarity. And that would clear the road for the actual utilisation of legal possibilities. And that, in my opinion, will start the revival of the Party spirit. To begin with, it would do no harm to arrange a conference of the Party workers who accept the decisions of the plenum,93 under the guidance of the Central Committee, of course. But all this after the “reform” of the central bodies, 94 and provided the Plekhanovites agree. It is quite possible that such a conference will produce the people suitable for the above-mentioned central group. I think that the benefits of such a conference are obvious in many other respects too. But we must act firmly and relentlessly and not fear reproaches from the Liquidators, Trotskyites and Vperyod-ists. If the Plekhanovites and Leninites unite on the basis of work in Russia, they can afford to ignore all reproaches, no matter from what quarter they come.
That is what I think about work in Russia.
Now about myself. I have another six months to go here.95 When the term expires I shall be entirely at your service. If the need for Party workers is really acute, I could get away at once. I have read No. 1 of Mysl.96 I can picture to myself how much clarity and encouragement the workers will gain even from the mere fact that yesterday’s opponents are acting together, and how much confusion and chaos this will cause in the ranks of the Liquidators. And every honest person will say that this will not be bad.
There is a decent crowd here in exile, and it would be a very good thing if they could be supplied with the illegal periodicals. Send us Sotsial-Demokrat No. 17 and onwards, and also the “Supplement” to SotsialDemokrat. We have not received Rabochaya Gazeta,97 neither No. 1 nor No. 2, nor have we received Golos Sotsial-Demokrata. I suppose we shall receive Zvezda.98 Send to the following addresses: 1) Solvychegodsk, Vologda Gubernia, for Ivan Isaakovich Bogomolov; 2) Solvychegodsk, Vologda Gubernia, for Pyotr Mikhailovich Serafimov. Товарищ Семен! Вчера я получил от товарищей ваше письмо. Прежде всего горячий
привет Ленину и др. А потом по поводу вашего письма и вообще о “проклятых
вопросах”.
По моему мнению, линия блока (Ленин – Плеханов) единственно правильная: 1) она,
и только она, отвечает действительным интересам работы в России, требующим
сплочения всех действительно партийных элементов; 2) она, и только она, ускоряет
процесс освобождения легальных организаций из-под гнета ликвидаторов, вырывая
яму между рабочими-меньшевиками и ликвидаторами, рассеивая и убивая последних.
Борьба за влияние в легальных организациях является злобой дня, необходимым
этапом на пути к возрождению партии, а блок составляет единственное средство для
очищения таких организаций от мусора ликвидаторства.
В плане блока видна рука Ленина, – он мужик умный и знает, где раки зимуют. Но
это еще не значит, что всякий блок хорош. Троцковский блок (он бы сказал –
“синтез”) – это тухлая беспринципность,
маниловская амальгама разнородных принципов, беспомощная тоска беспринципного
человека по “хорошему” принципу. Логика вещей строго принципиальна по своей
природе и она не потерпит амальгам. Блок Ленин– Плеханов потому и является
жизненным, что он глубоко принципиален, основан на единстве взглядов по вопросу
о путях возрождения партии. Но именно потому, что это блок, а не слияние, –
именно потому большевикам нужна своя фракция. Очень может быть, что в ходе
работы большевики окончательно приручат плехановцев, но это лишь может быть.
Спать и надеяться на такой исход, хотя бы и очень вероятный, нам, во всяком
случае, не следует. Чем сплоченнее будут действовать большевики, чем
организованнее будут выступать, тем больше шансов на возможность приручения. Мы
должны поэтому неустанно ковать на всех наковальнях. О вперёдовцах ничего не
говорю, так как теперь они менее интересны, чем ликвидаторы и плехановцы. Если
когда-нибудь очухаются – хорошо, конечно, а нет – бог с ними, пусть варятся в
своем собственном соку.
Так я думаю о загранице.
Но это не все и не главное даже. Главное – организация работы в России. История
нашей партии показывает, что вопросы разногласий разрешаются не в прениях, а
главным образом в ходе работы, в ходе применения принципов. Поэтому задача дня –
организация русской работы вокруг строго определенного принципа. Ликвидаторы
сразу поняли дело (нюх у них очень развит) и начали примащиваться (уже
примостились) в легальных рабочих организациях, причем имеют, оказывается, свой
нелегальный русский центр, направляющий и т.д. работу. А мы все “готовимся”,
пребываем в стадии репетиций. По-моему, для нас очередной задачей, не терпящей
отлагательства) является организация центральной (русской) группы) объединяющей
нелегальную, полулегальную и легальную работу на первых порах в главных центрах
(Питер, Москва, Урал, Юг). Назовите ее как хотите – “русской частью Цека” или
вспомогательной группой при Цека – это безразлично. Но такая группа нужна как
воздух, как хлеб. Теперь на местах среди работников царит неизвестность,
одиночество, оторванность, у всех руки опускаются. Группа же эта могла бы
оживить работу, внести ясность. А это расчистило бы путь к действительному
использованию легальных возможностей. С этого, по-моему, и пойдет дело
возрождения партийности. Не мешало бы организовать предварительно совещание
работников, признающих решения пленума [96], конечно, под руководством Цека. Все
это после “реформы” центральных учреждений [97] и при условии согласия со
стороны плехановцев. Очень может быть, что это совещание и даст подходящих людей
для вышеназванной центральной группы. Польза такого совещания ясна, по-моему, и
во многих других отношениях. А действовать придется неуклонно и беспощадно, не
боясь нареканий со стороны ликвидаторов) троцкистов, вперёдовцев. Если
плехановцы и ленинцы сплотятся на почве работы в России, они могут не обращать
внимания на какие бы то ни было нарекания.
Так я думаю о работе в России.
Теперь о себе. Мне остается шесть месяцев [98]. По окончании срока я весь к
услугам. Если нужда в работниках в самом деле острая, то я могу сняться
немедленно. “Мысль” [99] № 1 читал. Воображаю, сколько ясности и бодрости внесет
среди рабочих даже один только факт совместного выступления вчерашних
противников, сколько смуты и хаоса посеет в рядах ликвидаторов. И всякий
порядочный человек скажет, что это будет недурно.
В ссылке имеется порядочная публика и было бы очень хорошо снабжать ее
периодическими нелегальными изданиями. Пришлите “Социал-Демократ” № 17 и дальше,
а также “Приложение” к “Социал-Демократу”. У нас нет “Рабочей Газеты”[100] ни №
1, ни № 2, нет и “Голоса Социал-Демократа”. “Звезду” [101], должно быть,

Camarada Semión: Los camaradas me entregaron ayer su carta. Ante todo, un caluroso saludo a Lenin y a los demás. Y ahora, a propósito de su carta y, en general, de las “malditas cuestiones”. A mi entender, la línea del bloque, (Lenin- Plejánov) es la única acertada: 1) esa línea, y solo ella, responde a los verdaderos intereses del trabajo en el interior de Rusia, que exigen la unión de todos los elementos que realmente están con el Partido; 2) esa línea, y sólo ella, acelera el proceso de liberación de las organizaciones legales del yugo de los liquidadores, abriendo un abismo entre los obreros mencheviques y los liquidadores y poniendo en dispersión y aplastando a estos últimos. La lucha por la influencia en las organizaciones legales es la cuestión palpitante del día, una etapa indispensable en el camino hacia el renacimiento del Partido, y el bloque constituye el único medio para depurar dichas organizaciones de la basura del liquidacionismo. En el plan del bloque se ve la mano de Lenin: es un hombre inteligente y sabe dónde invernan los cangrejos. Pero eso no quiere decir que todo bloque sea bueno. El bloque trotskista (Trotski diría “síntesis”) es una podrida y hedionda falta de principios, una amalgama manilovista* de principios heterogéneos, la nostalgia impotente de un hombre sin principios por un “buen” principio. La lógica de las cosas, por su propia naturaleza, se atiene en rigor a los principios y no admite amalgamas. El bloque Lenin-Plejánov tiene vitalidad precisamente porque se atiene con todo rigor a los principios, porque está basado en la unidad de criterios en cuanto a las vías para lograr el renacimiento del Partido. Pero precisamente porque es un bloque, y no una fusión, precisamente por eso los bolcheviques necesitan de su fracción. Bien puede ocurrir que, en el transcurso del trabajo, los bolcheviques domestiquen del todo a los plejanovistas, pero eso no es más que una posibilidad. En todo caso, no debemos echarnos a dormir y confiar en tal desenlace, aunque sea muy probable. Cuanto mayor sea la cohesión de los bolcheviques y más organizadas sus acciones, tanto mayores serán las probabilidades de esa domesticación. Debemos, por tanto, martillar sin descanso en todos los yunques. Nada digo de los de “Vperiod”, ya que ahora ofrecen menos interés que los liquidadores y los plejanovistas. Si algún día vuelven en sí, nos alegraremos, naturalmente; y si no,

(F. del T.) allá ellos y que se cuezan en su propia salsa. Esta es mi opinión en cuanto al extranjero. Pero eso no es todo, y ni siquiera lo principal. Lo principal es la organización del trabajo en Rusia. La historia de nuestro Partido demuestra que las discrepancias no se resuelven con discusiones, sino, sobre todo, en el transcurso del trabajo, en el transcurso de la aplicación de los principios. Por eso, la tarea del día consiste en la organización del trabajo dentro de Rusia en torno a un principio rigurosamente establecido. Los liquidadores comprendieron la cosa en seguida (tienen muy desarrollado el olfato), y han comenzado a infiltrarse (ya se han metido) en las organizaciones obreras legales; y ahora resulta que tienen dentro de Rusia su centro clandestino, que orienta, etc. su trabajo. Mientras tanto, nosotros no hacemos más que “prepararnos”, seguimos en la fase de los ensayos. A mi parecer, nuestra tarea inmediata e inaplazable es la de organizar un grupo central (dentro de Rusia) que unifique la actividad clandestina, semilegal y legal, al principio en los centros más importantes (Petersburgo, Moscú, los Urales, el Sur). Llamadlo como queráis –“parte rusa del C.C.” o grupo auxiliar adjunto al C.C.-, es lo mismo. Pero ese grupo nos es necesario como el pan y como el aire. Ahora, entre los militantes responsables de las organizaciones de base reinan la incertidumbre, la soledad, el aislamiento; en todos ellos se advierte desaliento. Ese grupo podría vivificar el trabajo, esclarecer las cuestiones. Y eso desbrozaría el camino para un aprovechamiento eficaz de las posibilidades legales. De aquí debería arrancar, a mi entender, el renacimiento del espíritu de partido. No estaría de más organizar previamente una Conferencia de militantes responsables que reconozcan las decisiones del Pleno93, bajo la dirección, naturalmente, del C.C. Todo ello después de la “reforma” de los organismos centrales94 y a condición de que los plejanovistas estén de acuerdo. Bien puede ocurrir que de esa Conferencia surjan hombres adecuados para el referido grupo central. A mi juicio, la Conferencia sería también útil en muchos otros sentidos. Pero habrá que actuar inflexible e implacablemente, sin temor a los reproches de los liquidadores, de los trotskistas ni de los de “Vperiod”. Si los plejanovistas y los leninistas se unen estrechamente sobre la base del trabajo en Rusia, bien pueden hacer oídos sordos a cualquier reproche. Esta es mi opinión en cuanto al trabajo en Rusia.

Ahora hablaré de mí. Me quedan seis meses95. En cuanto expire el plazo, estoy a vuestra entera disposición. Si en realidad el Partido necesita con urgencia hombres, puedo levantar vuelo inmediatamente. He leído el núm. 1 de “Misl”96. Me imagino cuánta claridad y qué ánimo dará a los obreros el mero hecho de que los adversarios de ayer actúen conjuntamente, y qué confusión, qué caos sembrará en las filas de los liquidadores. Toda persona honrada se alegrará de ese hecho. En el destierro hay buena gente y estaría muy bien proveerla de publicaciones periódicas clandestinas. Enviad el núm. 17 y siguientes de “Sotsial- Demokrat”, así como también el “Suplemento” al “Sotsial-Demokrat”. No tenemos ni el núm. 1, ni el núm. 2 de “Rabóchaia Gazieta”97, ni “Golas Sotsial- Demokrata”. Probablemente, recibiremos “Zviezdá”98.
