Rech has “erred” again! It appears that it “did not expect” from “the government” “tactless” explanations of the Lena atrocities. You see, it had “hoped” that Minister Makarov would “take legal proceedings” against the Treshchenkos. But suddenly came Makarov’s statement that Treshchenko was right and that in future too the workers would be shot down!
“We erred,” observes the liberal Rech with false contrition, commenting on this matter (see Rech of April 12). Poor Cadets! How many times they have “erred” in their expectations concerning the government! Not so very long ago they “thought” that we had a constitution in Russia, and they assured Europe, in all languages, that “our united government” is “quite constitutional.” That was in London, far away from Russia. But it was enough for them to return to Russia, to the land of “discretion” and “prevention,” for them to admit their “error” and to “become disillusioned.” Only very recently they “believed” that Stolypin had succeeded in putting the country on the road to parliamentary “renovation.” But it was enough for Stolypin to put the notorious 87 clause into operation for the Cadets to start singing again about “errors” and “misunderstandings,”
Was it so long ago that the Cadets drew a parallel between the Russian government (recall the dock workers’ strike) and the British government in their attitude towards strikes? But it was enough for the Lena tragedy to be enacted for the Cadets to begin again to chant their hypocritical “we erred.”
The remarkable thing is that while “errors” and “disillusionments” continue to multiply, the Cadet tactics of making advances to the government remain unchanged! Poor, poor Cadets! Evidently they “count on” naive readers who believe in their sincerity.
They “think” that people do not notice their obsequious grovelling before the enemies of Russia’s emancipation. They do not yet realise that, while until now they have “erred” again and again in their expectations of the government, they are now going to be “disillusioned” with the masses of the people, who, at last, will discern their counter-revolutionary character and turn their backs on them.
Whom will Messrs. the Cadets deceive then? Grovelling before the government and hypocrisy towards the country—why are they called the “Party of
Popular Freedom”?

“Речь” еще раз “ошиблась”! Она, оказывается, “не ожидала” от “правительства”
“бестактных” объяснений по поводу ленских зверств. Она, видите ли, “надеялась”,
что министр Макаров призовет “к законной ответственности” господ Трещенко. И
вдруг – заявление Макарова о том, что Трещенко прав, а рабочих будут и впредь
расстреливать!
“Мы ошиблись”, с лживым сокрушением замечает по этому поводу либеральная “Речь”
(см. “Речь” от 12 апреля).
Бедные кадеты, который раз они “ошибаются” в своих расчетах на правительство!
Еще не так давно они “думали”, что в России имеется конституция; и они на всех
языках клялись перед Европой, что “наше объединенное правительство” “вполне
конституционно”. Это было в Лондоне, вдали от России. Но стоило им вернуться в
Россию, в страну “усмотрений” и “пресечений”, чтобы признать свою “ошибку” и
“разочароваться”.
Еще не так давно они “верили”, что Столыпину удалось поставить страну на путь парламентского
“обновления”. Но стоило Столыпину пустить в ход знаменитую 87 статью[105], – и
кадеты снова пошли петь об “ошибках” и “недоразумениях”.
Давно ли кадеты проводили параллель между русским правительством (вспомните
забастовку портовых рабочих) и английским в их отношении к забастовкам? Но
стоило разыграться ленской драме, чтобы кадеты еще раз пропели свое фарисейское
“мы ошиблись”.
И знаменательно: “ошибки” и “разочарования” все растут, а кадетская тактика
заигрывания с правительством остается без изменения!
Бедные, бедные кадеты! Они, очевидно, “рассчитывают” на наивных читателей, верящих в их искренность.
Они “думают”, что население не замечает их лакейского кривляния перед врагами освобождения России.
Они еще не знают, что если до сих пор то и дело “ошибались” они в своих видах на
правительство, то теперь им предстоит “разочароваться” в массах населения,
которые поймут, наконец, их контрреволюционный характер и повернутся к ним
спиной. Кого же тогда будут обманывать господа кадеты? Лакейство перед
правительством, фарисейство перед страной – за что же их называют “партией
народной свободы”?

¡”Riech” se ha “equivocado” una vez más! Resulta que “no esperaba” del “gobierno” unas explicaciones “faltas de tacto” con motivo de las ferocidades del Lena. ¿Saben ustedes?, “Riech” “esperaba” que el ministro Makárov recabase “responsabilidad legal” para los Tréschenko. ¡Y de pronto aparece la declaración de Makárov diciendo que Tréschenko tiene razón, y que en adelante se seguirá fusilando a los obreros! “Nos hemos equivocado”, observa con hipócrita desolación a este propósito el periódico liberal “Riech” (v. “Riech” del 12 de abril). ¡Pobres demócratas constitucionalistas!, ¡cuántas veces no se habrán “equivocado” al confiar en el gobierno! No hace aún mucho, “pensaban” que en Rusia había una Constitución; y en todas las lenguas juraban ante Europa que “nuestro gobierno de unificación” era “plenamente constitucional”. Eso era en Londres, lejos de Rusia. Pero les bastó regresar a Rusia, al país de los “en vista de” y lo “ordeno y mando”, para reconocer su “error” y “desengañarse”. No hace aún mucho, “creían” que Stolypin había conseguido llevar el país por la vía de la “renovación” parlamentaria. Pero bastó que Stolypin aplicase el famoso artículo 87102, para que los demócratas constitucionalistas de nuevo se lamentasen de sus “errores” y “malentendidos”. ¿Hace, acaso, mucho que los demócratas constitucionalistas trazaban un paralelo entre el gobierno ruso (recodad la huelga de los obreros portuarios) y el inglés en cuanto a su actitud ante las huelgas? Pero bastó que se produjese el drama del Lena para que entonasen una vez más su farisaico “nos hemos equivocado”. Y cosa sintomática: ¡sus “errores” y sus “desengaños” no hacen más que aumentar, pero su táctica de coqueteo con el gobierno sigue siendo la misma! ¡Pobres, pobres demócratas constitucionalistas! Por lo visto, “cuentan” con hallar lectores ingenuos que crean en su sinceridad. “Suponen” que la población no advierte sus reverencias lacayunas ante los enemigos de la emancipación de Rusia. No saben aún que si hasta el presente “se han equivocado” a cada paso en las esperanzas que cifraban en el gobierno, ahora les queda “desengañarse” de las masas de la población, que comprenderán, al fin, su carácter contrarrevolucionario y les volverán la espalda. ¿A quién engañarán entonces los señores demócratas constitucionalistas? Servilismo ante el gobierno, fariseísmo ante el país: ¿por qué, pues, se les llama “partido de la libertad popular”?
