It was not so long ago, only a year back, that Messrs. the Liquidators, the zealous advocates of a “legal party,” launched with a lot of noise and clamour the so-called petition campaign. The well-known Delo Zhizni, 105 the “publicist” organ of the Liquidators, wrote that the immediate task of the labour movement was to fight for the right of association by means of petitions.
Nasha Zarya,106 the “scientific” organ of the Liquidators, “substantiating” this task, assured the workers that petitions would organise around them the “broad masses.”
But then the bloody tragedy in the Lena goldfields was enacted, real life with its implacable antagonisms came upon the scene and the Liquidators’ petition tactics were scattered to the winds like dust. Lawful strikes, petitions, requests, were all simply swept over- “The petitions which the workers sent

board. The “renovated” system revealed its true features. And Minister Makarov, the representative of this system, stated, as if to introduce more clarity into the matter, that the shooting of 500 workers was not the end but only the beginning, and that, with God’s help, the same thing would be repeated in future. . . .
That was a perfect bull’s-eye! The petition tactics, so noisily proclaimed, were shattered by life! The petition policy proved to be impotent!
It is evident, therefore, that it is not petitions that are destined to settle the age-long contest between the old and the new Russia. . . .
And do not the innumerable meetings and strikes of the workers which have taken place throughout Russia in connection with the Lena massacre prove once again that the workers will not take the path of petitions? Listen to the workers’ deputy Kuznetsov:
“Actually, the petitions which the workers sent demanding freedom of association did not improve their conditions in the least. On the contrary, in answer to these demands the workers were shot down.” . . .
That is what Deputy Kuznetsov says.
A workers’ deputy who heeds the voice of the workers, from whose ranks he comes, could not say anything else. No, the Liquidators are out of luck! . . .
Well, what about the petition tactics? Where are they to be put?
As far away from the workers as possible, of course. . . .
Yes, indeed, the lessons of life are evidently not being wasted, even on the Liquidators. It seems that the petition intoxication is beginning to pass off. Well, we congratulate them on becoming sober, congratulate them from the bottom of our hearts!
We have been saying for a long time: life is allpowerful, and it always triumphs. . . .

Из речи депутата Кузнецова
Это было не так давно – всего год назад – когда ревнители “легальной партии”,
господа ликвидаторы, с шумом и треском открыли так называемую петиционную
кампанию.
“Публицистический” орган ликвидаторов, всем известное “Дело Жизни”[107], писал,
что очередной задачей рабочего движения является борьба за право коалиций путем
петиций.
“Научный” орган ликвидаторов, “Наша Заря”[108], “обосновывая” эту задачу, уверял
рабочих, что петиции сорганизуют вокруг себя “широкие массы”.
Но вот разыгралась на Ленских приисках кровавая драма, выступила на сцену живая
жизнь с ее неумолимыми противоречиями, – и петиционная тактика ликвидаторов
разлетелась в прах, Законная забастовка, петиции, просьбы – все пошло насмарку,
“Обновленный” строй показал свое настоящее лицо. А представитель этого строя,
министр Макаров, как бы для большей ясности, заявил, что расстрел 500 рабочих –
еще не все, что это только начало, что и впредь с божией помощью будет то же
самое...
Не в бровь, а в глаз! С шумом выступившая петиционная тактика разбилась о жизнь!
Политика петиций оказалась бессильной!
Не петициям, стало быть, суждено разрешить вековую тяжбу между старой и новой Россией...
А многочисленные митинги и забастовки рабочих, поднятые во всех углах России, по
поводу ленской бойни – разве они не говорят лишний раз о том, что рабочие не
пойдут по пути петиций?
Послушайте-ка депутата от рабочих Кузнецова:
“В сущности петиции, которые рабочие прислали с требованием свободы коалиций,
нисколько не облегчили их положения, а, наоборот, в ответ на эти требования
рабочие получили расстрел”...
Вот что говорит депутат Кузнецов.
Да иначе и не может говорить депутат от рабочих, прислушивающийся к голосу
родной для него рабочей среды.
Нет, не везет ликвидаторам!..
Ну, а петиционная тактика? Куда ж ее девать?
– Уж, конечно, куда-нибудь подальше от рабочих...
Да, да, уроки жизни, невидимому, не проходят даром даже для ликвидаторов.
Петиционное опьянение, кажется, начинает проходить. Что ж, приветствуем их с
протрезвлением, всей душой приветствуем!
Мы ведь давно твердим: жизнь всесильна, и она всегда побеждает...

No hace mucho -un año atrás-, los celosos propugnadores de un “partido legal”, los señores liquidadores, inauguraron a bombo y platillos la llamada campaña de peticiones. El órgano “publicístico” de los liquidadores, “Dielo Zhizni”l05, de todos conocido, escribía que la tarea inmediata del movimiento obrero es la lucha en favor del derecho de asociación por medio de peticiones. El órgano “científico” de los liquidadores, “Nasha Zariá”106, aseguraba a los obreros, “fundamentando” esta tarea, que en torno a las peticiones se organizaría a las “grandes masas”. Pero he aquí que se produjo en los placeres del Lena un sangriento drama; en la escena irrumpió la vida real con sus inexorables contradicciones, y la táctica petitoria de los liquidadores se vino abajo hecha añicos. La huelga legal, las peticiones, las solicitudes, todo se ha desmoronado. El régimen “renovado” ha hecho ver su auténtica faz. Y un representante de este régimen, el ministro Makárov, por lo visto para mayor claridad declaró que la matanza de 500 obreros no es aún todo, que es sólo el comienzo, y que en lo sucesivo, con la ayuda de Dios, sucederá lo mismo... ¡Certero golpe! ¡La táctica de peticiones, proclamada ruidosamente, se ha estrellado contra la realidad de la vida! ¡La política de peticiones ha resultado impotente! Por tanto, no es con peticiones como ha de resolverse el pleito secular entre la vieja y la nueva Rusia... Y los numerosos mítines y huelgas de los obreros, organizados en todos los confines de Rusia con motivo de la matanza del Lena, ¿acaso no indican una vez más que los obreros no seguirán la senda de las peticiones? Escuchad al diputado obrero Kuznietsov: “En realidad, las peticiones elevadas por los obreros reivindicando la libertad de asociarse, no han aliviado en lo más mínimo su situación; por el contrario, a esa reivindicación se ha contestado con descargas de fusil”... Eso es lo que dice el diputado Kuznietsov. Y no puede hablar de otra forma un diputado de los obreros, atento a la voz de los medios obreros, que son los suyos. ¡La suerte no acompaña a los liquidadores!... Pero ¿y la táctica de peticiones? ¿Qué hacer con ella? - Arrinconarla, naturalmente, lo más lejos posible de los obreros... Sí, sí, las lecciones de la vida, por lo visto, no pasan en balde ni siquiera para los liquidadores. Parece que la borrachera de las peticiones comienza a desvanecerse. Pues bien; ¡les felicitamos por haber recobrado la lucidez, les felicitamos de todo corazón! Ya hace mucho que nosotros veníamos diciendo: la vida es omnipotente y siempre triunfa...
