Anyone who reads Zvezda and knows its contributors, who are also contributors to Pravda,112 will not find it difficult to understand the line Pravda will pursue. To illuminate the path of the Russian labour movement with the light of international Social-Democracy, to spread the truth among the workers about the friends and enemies of the working class, to guard the interests of labour’s cause—such are the aims Pravda will pursue. In pursuing these aims we do not in the least intend to gloss over the disagreements that exist among the Social-Democratic workers. More than that: in our opinion, a powerful and virile movement is inconceivable without disagreements—”complete identity of views” can exist only in the graveyard! But that does not mean that points of disagreement outweigh points of agreement. Far from it! Much as the advanced workers may disagree among themselves, they cannot forget that all of them, irrespective of group, are equally exploited, that all of them, irrespective of group, are equally without rights. Hence, Pravda will call, firstly and mainly, for unity in the proletarian class struggle, for unity at all costs. Just as we must be uncompromising towards our enemies, so must we yield to one another. War upon the enemies of the labour movement, peace and co-operation within the movement —that is what Pravda will be guided by in its daily activities.
It is particularly necessary to emphasise this now, when the Lena events and the forthcoming elections to the Fourth Duma raise before the workers with exceptional persistence the necessity of uniting in a single class organisation. . . .
In entering upon our task we are aware that our path is bestrewn with thorns. It is sufficient to recall Zvezda, which has experienced repeated confiscations and “prosecutions.” But the thorns will not daunt us if the sympathy of the workers which Pravda now enjoys continues in the future. From this sympathy it will draw energy for the struggle! We would like this sympathy to grow. Moreover, we would like the workers not to confine themselves to sympathy alone, but to take an active part in the conduct of our newspaper. Let not the workers say that they are “not used to” writing. Working-class writers do not drop ready-made from the skies; they can be trained only gradually, in the course of literary activity. All that is needed is to start on the job boldly: you may stumble once or twice, but in the end you will learn to write. . . .
And so, all together let us set to work!

Кто читает “Звезду” и знает ее сотрудников, являющихся также сотрудниками
“Правды”[113], тому не трудно понять, в каком направлении будет работать
“Правда”. Освещать путь русского рабочего движения светом международной
социал-демократии, сеять правду среди рабочих о друзьях и врагах рабочего
класса, стоять на страже интересов рабочего дела – вот какие цели будет
преследовать “Правда”.
Ставя такие цели, мы отнюдь не намерены замазывать разногласий, имеющихся среди
социал-демократических рабочих. Более того: мы думаем, что мощное и полное жизни
движение немыслимо без разногласий, – только на кладбище осуществимо “полное
тождество взглядов”! Но это еще не значит, что пунктов расхождения больше, чем
пунктов схождения. Далеко нет! Как бы ни расходились передовые рабочие, они не
могут забыть, что все они, без различия фракций, – одинаково эксплуатируемы, что
все они, без различия фракций, одинаково бесправны. Поэтому “Правда” будет
призывать, прежде всего и главным образом, к единству классовой борьбы
пролетариата; к единству во что бы то ни стало. Поскольку мы должны быть
непримиримы по отношению к врагам, постольку же требуется от нас уступчивость по
отношению друг к другу. Война врагам рабочего движения, мир и дружная работа
внутри движения – вот чем будет руководствоваться “Правда” в своей повседневной
работе.
Это особенно необходимо подчеркнуть теперь, когда ленские события и наступающие
выборы в IV Думу с исключительной настойчивостью ставят перед рабочими вопросе
необходимости сплотиться в единую классовую организацию...
Вступая в работу, мы знаем, что путь наш усеян терниями. Достаточно вспомнить
“Звезду”, переносящую кучу конфискаций и “привлечений”. Но тернии не страшны,
если сочувствие рабочих, окружающее теперь “Правду”, будет продолжаться и
впредь. В этом сочувствии будет она черпать энергию для борьбы! Мы бы желали,
чтобы сочувствие это росло. Мы бы желали, кроме того, чтобы рабочие не
ограничивались одним сочувствием, а принимали активное участие в деле ведения
нашей газеты. Пусть не говорят рабочие, что писательство для них “непривычная”
работа: рабочие – литераторы не падают готовыми с неба, они вырабатываются лишь
исподволь, в ходе литературной работы. Нужно только смелее браться за дело: раза
два споткнешься, а там и научишься писать...
Итак, дружнее за работу!

A quien lea “Zviezdá” y conozca a sus colaboradores, que lo son también de “Pravda”112, no le será difícil comprender qué dirección va a seguir “Pravda” en su actividad. Iluminar el camino del movimiento obrero ruso con la luz de la socialdemocracia internacional, sembrar la verdad entre los obreros acerca de quiénes son los amigos y quiénes los enemigos de la clase obrera, defender los intereses de la causa obrera: ésos son los objetivos que ha de perseguir “Pravda”. Al imponernos tales objetivos, no queremos en modo alguno velar las discrepancias existentes entre los obreros socialdemócratas. Es más, consideramos que un movimiento poderoso y lleno de vida es inconcebible sin discrepancias; ¡sólo en el cementerio es realizable “la plena identidad de opiniones”! Pero eso no quiere decir todavía que los puntos de divergencia sean más que los de coincidencia. ¡Nada de eso! Por mucho que discrepen entre sí los obreros avanzados, no pueden olvidar que todos ellos, sin distinción de fracciones, son igualmente explotados; que todos ellos, sin distinción de fracciones, están igualmente privados de derechos. Por eso “Pravda” ha de exhortar, ante todo y sobre todo, a la unidad en la lucha de clase del proletariado, a la unidad a toda costa. En la misma medida en que debemos ser intransigentes para con los enemigos, se impone que seamos condescendientes entre nosotros. Guerra a los enemigos del movimiento obrero, paz y trabajo unido en el seno del movimiento: ésa ha de ser la norma rectora de “Pravda” en su labor cotidiana. Es sobre todo necesario subrayar esa idea ahora, cuando los sucesos del Lena y las próximas elecciones a la IV Duma plantean con extraordinaria insistencia ante los obreros la necesidad de unirse estrechamente en una sola organización de clase... Comenzamos esta labor sabiendo que nuestro camino está sembrado de espinas. Basta recordar “Zviezdá”, que viene sufriendo un sinfín de recogidas y sanciones. Pero las espinas no son de temer si la simpatía con que los obreros rodean a “Pravda” en el presente no decae. ¡De esta simpatía sacará “Pravda” energías para la lucha! Desearíamos que esta simpatía fuese en aumento. Desearíamos, además, que los obreros no se limitasen a simpatizar y que tomasen parte activa en la edición de nuestro periódico. Que no digan los obreros que el escribir es para ellos una labor “desacostumbrada”: los obreros literatos no caen del cielo ya hechos; se van formando poco a poco, en el transcurso de la labor literaria. Lo que hace falta es poner manos a la obra con más audacia: se tropieza una o dos veces, pero después se aprende a escribir... Pues bien, ¡manos a la obra con más energía y unidad!
