In your letter of 9 November, you write that you will send me my "debt" in small installments. I would like you to send them as soon as possible, however small the installments. (If there is money, send it directly to me in Kostino.) I say this because I need money desperately. Everything would be bearable were it not for this illness, but this accursed illness, requiring care (i.e., money), drives me out of all balance and patience. I am waiting. As soon as I receive the German books, I shall supplement the articles and send them in revised form...

NOTE
The reference is to royalties for publications. In 1912-1913, Stalin worked on a series of articles on the national question. The largest of these, "Marxism and the National Question," was written in Vienna and first published under the signature "K. Stalin" in issues Nos. 3-5 of the journal Prosveshchenie under the title "The National Question and Social Democracy." As a separate pamphlet, this work, which incorporated a number of smaller articles on the national question, was published in 1914 by the Priboi publishing house (St. Petersburg). A corner of the postcard with the date in the upper left has been torn off. On the copy in the upper left corner are two notes in Stalin's hand: "1913. В своем письме от 9/ХI пишете, что будете присылать мне мой “долг” по маленьким частям. Я бы хотел, чтобы Вы их прислали возможно скоро, по каким бы маленьким частям ни было. (Если деньги будут, шлите прямо на меня в Костино). Говорю это потому, что деньги нужны до безобразия. Все бы ничего, если бы не болезнь, но эта проклятая болезнь, требующая ухода (т. е. денег), выводит из равновесия и терпения. Жду. Как только получу немецкие книги, дополню статьи и в переработанном виде пошлю…

Речь идет о гонорарах за публикации. В 1912–1913 годах Сталин работал над серией статей по национальному вопросу. Самая большая из них “Марксизм и национальный вопрос” была написана в Вене и впервые напечатана за подписью “К. Сталин” в № 3–5 журнала “Просвещение” под названием “Национальный вопрос и социал-демократия”. Отдельной брошюрой эта работа, включавшая в себя ряд более мелких статей по национальному вопросу, была опубликована в 1914 году в издательстве “Прибой” (Петербург). См. Письмо Р.В.
