Driven to the wall by the onslaught of the revolution, the government of bourgeois timeservers is striving to wriggle out of it by handing out false assurances that it had no intention of fleeing from Petrograd and was not thinking of surrendering the capital.
Only yesterday it was being publicly stated (Izvestia!) that the government was “removing” to Moscow, as it considered the position of the capital “precarious.” Only yesterday there was open talk (“Defence Committee”!86) of “surrendering” Petrograd, and the government was demanding the removal of the guns from the approaches to the capital. Only yesterday landlord Rodzyanko, the confederate of Kerensky and Kornilov in the plot against the revolution, was welcoming the government’s “surrender” decision, for he wanted to see Petrograd, the navy and the Soviets perish. Only yesterday “London” was associating itself with this decision, for it wanted the government speedily to rid itself of Petrograd and the navy. All that was so only yesterday. . . . But today the panic-stricken timeservers in the government are retreating in disarray in face of the resolute determination of the navy and garrison to defend the capital and, stammering and contradicting one another, they are cravenly trying to cover up the truth and to vindicate themselves in the eyes of the revolution, which only yesterday they were preparing, so clumsily and ineffectively, to betray.
But Kerensky’s “categorical” statement that the “removal” has been postponed until the spring is refuted by Kishkin’s equally categorical statement that some of the government offices “might be transferred to Moscow now.” And B. Bogdanov, spokesman of the “Defence Committee” (who is anything but a Bolshevik!), declares just as categorically that “the government evinced a desire to leave Petrograd, and wide sections of the democracy perceived in the fact that the government was going the possibility that Petrograd would be surrendered” (Izvestia). This apart from the fact that according to the reports in the evening papers “the supporters of the Provisional Government’s removal to Moscow had . . . a preponderance of votes” (Russkiye Vedomosti). These miserable pigmies of the Provisional Government! They have been deceiving the people all the time. What else could they fall back on except deceiving the masses again in their attempt to cover up their disorderly retreat? But timeservers would not be timeservers if they confined themselves to deceit. Kerensky is retreating and resorting to deception to cover up his retreat; but at the same time he hurls accusations, plainly hinting at our Party, and rants about “recrudescence of rioting,” “dangerous enemies of the revolution,” “blackmail,” “perversion of the masses,” “hands stained with the blood of innocent victims” and so on.
Kerensky denouncing “enemies of the revolution!”— Kerensky, who with Kornilov and Savinkov plotted against the revolution and the Soviets and by fraudulent means got the Third Cavalry Corps to march on the capital.
Kerensky denouncing “recrudescence of rioting”!— Kerensky, who by raising the price of bread drove the rural population to rioting and incendiarism. Read the defencist Socialist-Revolutionary Vlast Naroda and judge for yourselves:
“Some of our correspondents claim that the present disorders are due to the raising of the fixed prices. The new prices immediately caused a general rise in the cost of living. This is evoking discontent, resentment and excessive irritation, which make the mob more prone than before to start rioting” (No. 140). Kerensky denouncing “perversion of the masses”!— Kerensky, who defiled the revolution and perverted its morals by reviving the secret police and political detective services with vermin like Vonlyarlyarsky and Shchukin at their head. . . .
Kerensky denouncing “blackmail”!—Kerensky, whose whole regime is one long tale of blackmailing the democracy, and who openly blackmailed the “Democratic Conference” with the false story of a military landing on the Finnish coast, in which he successfully competed with General Khabalov. . . .
Kerensky denouncing “hands stained with the blood of innocent victims”!—Kerensky, whose own hands are really stained with the innocent blood of tens of thousands of soldiers, the victims of the adventurist offensive launched at the front in June. . . .
There is a limit to everything, they say. But obviously there is no limit to the brazenness of the bourgeois timeservers. . . .
Izvestia reports that in the “Council of the Republic” Kerensky was greeted with “loud and prolonged applause from all benches.” We expected nothing else from the servile Pre-parliament, that abortion of Kornilovism and godchild of Kerensky.
But be it known to these gentry, to all of them, both those who are secretly plotting reprisals against the “Lefts” and those who are applauding these reprisals in advance, that when the decisive hour strikes they will all equally be called to account by the revolution which they are seeking to betray, but which they will not succeed in hoodwinking. Припертое к стене натиском революции правительство буржуазных временщиков
пробует извернуться, швыряя лживыми уверениями о том, что оно не собиралось
бежать из Петрограда и не хотело сдавать столицу.
Вчера еще сообщали во всеуслышание (“Известия”!), что правительство “переезжает”
в Москву, считая положение столицы “неблагополучным”. Вчера еще говорили открыто
(“комиссия по обороне”[89]!) о “сдаче” Петрограда, причем правительство
требовало снятия пушек с подступов к столице. Вчера еще компаньон Керенского и
Корнилова по заговору против революции, помещик Родзянко, приветствовал решение
правительства о “сдаче”, желая гибели Петрограду, флоту и Советам. Вчера еще
присоединялся к этому решению “Лондон”, желая правительству скорого освобождения
от Петрограда и флота. Вчера еще все это было... А сегодня перепуганные
временщики из правительства, в беспорядке отступая перед флотом и гарнизоном,
непоколебимо решившими защищать столицу, путаясь и противореча друг другу, –
трусливо пытаются замазать факты, стараются оправдаться перед революцией,
предать которую они собирались вчера столь неудачно и неловко.
При этом “категорическое” заявление Керенского об отсрочке “переезда” до весны
опровергается столь же категорическим заявлением Кишкина о том, что некоторые
правительственные учреждения “могут быть уже сейчас перевезены” в Москву. А
докладчик “комиссии по обороне” Б. Богданов (отнюдь не большевик!) также
категорически заявляет, что “со стороны правительства выяснилось желание
оставить Петроград, причем в факте отъезда правительства широкие слои демократии
усмотрели возможность сдачи Петрограда” (“Известия”). Мы уже не говорим о том,
что, по сообщению вечерних газет, “сторонники отъезда Временного правительства в
Москву имели... перевес голосов” (“Русские Ведомости”).
Жалкие, маленькие люди из Временного правительства! Они, все время обманывавшие
народ, – могли ли они рассчитывать на что-либо другое, кроме нового обмана масс,
прикрыть которым стараются они свое беспорядочное отступление?
Но временщики не были бы временщиками, если бы они ограничивались обманом.
Отступая и прикрываясь обманом, Керенский бросает ряд обвинений, кивая на нашу
партию и разглагольствуя о “возрождении погромов” и “опасных врагах революции”,
о “шантаже” и “развращении масс”, о “запачканных кровью невинных жертв руках” и
пр.
Керенский говорит против “врагов революции”, тот самый Керенский, который вместе
с Корниловым и Савинковым устраивал заговор против революции и Советов, обманным
путем подтягивая к столице третий конный корпус!..
Керенский говорит против “возрождения погромов”, тот самый Керенский, который,
повысив цены на хлеб, толкнул деревню на погромы и поджоги! Прочтите
оборонческо-эсеровскую газету “Власть Народа” и судите сами:
“Некоторые из наших корреспондентов пишут, что последние беспорядки следует
поставить в связь с повышением твердых цен. Новые цены сразу вызвали общее
вздорожание жизни. Отсюда появились недовольство, озлобленность, излишняя
нервность, в результате чего толпа легче, чем прежде, идет на погром!..” (№
140).
Керенский говорит против “развращения масс”, тот самый Керенский, который
загрязнил революцию и извратил ее чистые нравы, воскресив институты охранников и
сыщиков с грязными Вонлярскими и Щукиными во главе!..
Керенский говорит против “шантажа”, тот самый Керенский, весь режим которого
является сплошным шантажом по отношению к демократии, который открыто
шантажировал “Демократическое совещание” несуществующим десантом на финляндских
берегах, с успехом конкурируя с ген. Хабаловым!..
Керенский говорит о “забрызганных кровью невинных жертв руках”, тот самый
Керенский, руки которого действительно забрызганы невинной кровью десятков тысяч
солдат, жертв авантюристского наступления на фронте в июне этого года!..
Говорят, что на свете все имеет свой предел. Но разве не ясно, что наглости
буржуазных временщиков нет предела?..
“Известия” сообщают, что члены “Совета республики” встретили Керенского
“продолжительными и шумными аплодисментами на всех скамьях”. Ничего другого и не
ожидали мы от лакейского предпарламента, выкинутого корниловщиной и крещеного
Керенским.
Но пусть знают эти господа, пусть знают все, и те, которые втихомолку готовят
репрессии против “левых”, и те, которые авансом аплодируют этим репрессиям, –
пусть знают они, что когда пробьет решительный час, все они одинаково ответят
перед революцией, предать которую они хотят, но обмануть которую им не удастся.

Colocado entre la espada y la pared por el empuje de la revolución, el gobierno de los testaferros provisionales de la burguesía trata de escabullirse, lanzando mendaces afirmaciones de que no pensaba huir de Petrogrado y no quería entregar la capital. Todavía ayer se informaba públicamente (¡”Izvestia”!) que el gobierno se “traslada” a Moscú por considerar “insegura” la situación de la capital. Todavía ayer se hablaba públicamente (¡la “Comisión de Defensa”87!) de la “entrega” de Petrogrado, y el gobierno exigía que se retirasen los cañones de los accesos a la capital. Todavía ayer el terrateniente Rodzianko -socio de Kerenski y de Kornílov en el complot contra la revolución aplaudía la decisión del gobierno de “entregar” la capital, deseando la muerte de Petrogrado, de la flota y de los Soviets. Todavía ayer “Londres” se sumaba a esta decisión, deseando al gobierno que se viese libre pronto de Petrogrado y de la flota. Todavía ayer asistíamos a todo esto... Pero hoy, los testaferros provisionales que integran el gobierno, empavorecidos, retroceden en desorden ante la flota y la guarnición -que han decidido de modo irrevocable defender la capital-, se enredan y se contradicen unos a otros, intentando cobardemente velar los hechos y tratando de justificarse ante la revolución, a la que tan desafortunada y torpemente intentaban traicionar ayer. La declaración “categórica” de Kerenski, de que el “traslado” se aplaza hasta la primavera, es refutada por la declaración, no menos categórica, de Kishkin, de que algunas instituciones del gobierno “pueden ser trasladadas ya ahora” a Moscú. Y el ponente de la “Comisión de Defensa”, B. Bogdánov (¡en modo alguno bolchevique!), también declara categóricamente que “se ha puesto en claro que el gobierno tenía el deseo de abandonar Petrogrado, y que en el traslado del gobierno amplios sectores de la democracia veían la posibilidad de la entrega de Petrogrado” (“Izvestia”). No hablamos ya de que, según los periódicos de la tarde, los “partidarios del traslado del Gobierno Provisional a Moscú tenían... superioridad de votos” (“Russkie Viédomosti”). ¡Mezquinos homúnculos del Gobierno Provisional! Los que no han cesado de engañar al pueblo, ¿podían contar con otra cosa que no fuera un nuevo engaño de las masas, con el que intentan encubrir su retirada en desorden? Pero los testaferros provisionales no serían testaferros provisionales si se circunscribieran al engaño. Al retroceder y cubrirse con el engaño, Kerenski lanza una serie de acusaciones, aludiendo a nuestro Partido y perorando a propósito del “resurgimiento de los pogromos” y de los “peligrosos enemigos de la revolución”, del “chantaje” y de la “corrupción de las masas”, de las “manos manchadas con la sangre de víctimas inocentes” y de otras cosas por el estilo. ¡Kerenski habla contra los “enemigos de la revolución”, el mismo Kerenski que con Kornílov y Sávinkov tramó el complot contra la revolución y los Soviets, concentrando con engaños cerca de la capital al tercer cuerpo de caballería!... ¡Kerenski habla contra el “resurgimiento de los pogromos”, el mismo Kerenski que al elevar los precios de los cereales empujó el campo a los pogromos y a los incendios! Leed el periódico eserista defensista “Vlast Naroda” y juzgad vosotros mismos: “Algunos corresponsales nos comunican que los últimos desórdenes deben ser relacionados con la elevación de los precios fijos. Los nuevos precios han originado en el acto el encarecimiento general de la vida. De ahí que hayan surgido el descontento, el encono, un nerviosismo excesivo, debido a lo cual la multitud va con más facilidad que antes al pogromo...” (núm., 140). ¡Kerenski habla contra la “corrupción de las masas”, el mismo Kerenski que enlodó la revolución y pervirtió sus puras costumbres, resucitando las instituciones de la Ojrana y de la policía secreta, dirigidas por los abyectos Vonliarliarski y los Schukin!... ¡Kerenski habla contra el “chantaje”, el mismo Kerenski cuyo régimen es todo él un chantaje a la democracia, el mismo Kerenski que chantajeó abiertamente a la “Conferencia Democrática” con un inexistente desembarco de tropas en las costas de Finlandia, haciendo así una aventajada competencia al general Jabálov!... ¡Kerenski habla de las “manos manchadas con la sangre de víctimas inocentes”, el mismo Kerenski cuyas manos están efectivamente manchadas con la sangre inocente de decenas de millares de soldados, víctimas de la aventurera ofensiva en el frente en junio de este año!... Se dice que en este mundo todo tiene sus límites. Pero ¿acaso no es evidente que el descaro de los testaferros provisionales de la burguesía no tiene límite?.. “Izvestia” comunica que los miembros del “Consejo de la República” han recibido a Kerenski con “prolongados y clamorosos aplausos en todos los bancos”. No esperábamos, otra cosa del lacayuno
anteparlamento, el aborto de la korniloviada sacado de pila por Kerenski. Pero sepan estos señores, sépanlo todos -los que preparan a la chita callando represiones contra las “izquierdas” y los que las aplauden de antemano-, sepan que, cuando suene la hora decisiva, todos ellos habrán de responder por igual ante la revolución, a la que quieren traicionar, pero a la que no conseguirán engañar.
