At a time when the revolutionary movement is rising in Europe, when old thrones and crowns are tumbling and giving place to revolutionary Soviets of Workers and Soldiers, and the occupied regions are ejecting the creatures of imperialism from their territories, the eyes of all are naturally turned to the West. It is there, in the West, that the chains of imperialism, which were forged in Europe and which are strangling the whole world, must first of all be smashed. It is there, first of all in the West, that the new, socialist life must vigorously develop. At such a moment one “involuntarily” tends to lose sight of, to forget the far-off East, with its hundreds of millions of inhabitants enslaved by imperialism. Yet the East should not be forgotten for a single moment, if only because it represents the “inexhaustible” reserve and “most reliable” rear of world imperialism . The imperialists have always looked upon the East as the basis of their prosperity. Have not the inestimable natural resources (cotton, oil, gold, coal, ores) of the East been an “apple of discord” between the imperialists of all countries? That, in fact, explains why, while fighting in Europe and prating about the West, the imperialists have never ceased to think of China, India, Persia, Egypt and Morocco, because the East was always the real point at issue. It is this that chiefly explains why they so zealously maintain “law and order” in the countries of the East—without this, imperialism’s far rear would not be secure.
But it is not only the wealth of the East that the imperialists need. They also need the “obedient” “man power” which abounds in the colonies and semi-colonies of the East. They need the “compliant” and cheap “labour power” of the Eastern peoples. They need, furthermore, the “obedient” “young lads” of the countries of the East from whom they recruit the so-called “coloured” troops which they will not hesitate to hurl against “their own” revolutionary workers. That is why they call the Eastern countries their “inexhaustible” reserve. It is the task of communism to break the age-long sleep of the oppressed peoples of the East, to infect the workers and peasants of these countries with the emancipatory spirit of revolution, to rouse them to fight imperialism, and thus deprive world imperialism of its “most reliable” rear and “inexhaustible” reserve. Without this, the definite triumph of socialism, complete victory over imperialism, is unthinkable. The revolution in Russia was the first to rouse the oppressed peoples of the East to fight imperialism. The Soviets in Persia, India and China are a clear symptom that the age-long sleep of the workers and peasants of the East is becoming a thing of the past. Revolution in the West will undoubtedly give a new spur to the revolutionary movement in the East, will infuse it with courage and faith in victory.
And no little help in revolutionizing the East will be rendered by the imperialists themselves, with their new annexations, which are drawing new countries into the fight against imperialism and extending the base of world revolution.
It is the duty of the Communists to intervene in the growing spontaneous movement in the East and to develop it further, into a conscious struggle against imperialism.
From that standpoint, the resolution of the recent Conference of Moslem Communists,36 calling for more intense propaganda in the East—in Persia, India and China—is undoubtedly of profound revolutionary significance. Let us hope that our Moslem comrades will carry outtheir highly important decision. For the truth must be grasped once and for all that whoever desires the triumph of socialism must not forget the East.

В момент подымающегося революционного движения в Европе, когда старые троны и
короны разваливаются, уступая место революционным Советам рабочих и солдат, а
оккупированные области выбрасывают со своей территории ставленников
империализма, – взоры всех, естественно, обращаются на Запад. Там, на Западе,
должны, прежде всего, разбиться цепи империализма, выкованные в Европе и душащие
весь мир. Там, на Западе, прежде всего, должна забить ключом новая,
социалистическая жизнь. В такой момент как-то “само собой” исчезает из поля
зрения, забывается далекий Восток с его сотнями миллионов порабощенного
империализмом населения.
Между тем, забывать Восток нельзя ни на одну минуту, хотя бы потому, что он
служит “неисчерпаемым” резервом и “надежнейшим” тылом для мирового империализма.
Империалисты всегда смотрели на Восток, как на основу своего благополучия.
Несметные естественные богатства стран Востока (хлопок, нефть, золото, уголь,
руда), – разве не они послужили “яблоком раздора” для империалистов всех стран.
Этим, собственно, и объясняется, что, воюя в Европе и болтая о Западе,
империалисты никогда не переставали думать о Китае, Индии, Персии, Египте,
Марокко, ибо речь шла, собственно говоря, все время о Востоке. Этим, главным
образом, и объясняется то рвение, с каким они поддерживают в странах Востока
“порядок и законность”: без этого глубокий тыл империализма не был бы обеспечен.
Но империалистам необходимы не только богатства Востока. Им нужен тот
“послушный” “людской материал”, которым изобилуют колонии и полуколонии Востока.
Им нужны “покладистые” и дешевые “рабочие руки” из народов Востока. Им нужны
кроме того “послушные” “молодые ребята” из стран Востока, среди которых они
вербуют так называемые “цветные” войска и которых они не замедлят пустить в ход
против “своих же собственных” революционных рабочих. Вот почему они называют
страны Востока своим “неисчерпаемым” резервом.
Задача коммунизма – разбить вековую спячку угнетенных народов Востока, заразить
рабочих и крестьян этих стран освобождающим духом революции, поднять их на
борьбу с империализмом и лишить, таким образом, мировой империализм его
“надежнейшего” тыла, его “неисчерпаемого” резерва.
Без этого нечего и думать об окончательном торжестве социализма, о полной победе над империализмом.
Революция в России первая подняла угнетенные народы Востока на борьбу с
империализмом. Советы депутатов в Персии, Индии, Китае – прямой признак того,
что вековая спячка рабочих и крестьян Востока отходит в область прошлого.
Революция на Западе даст, несомненно, новый толчок революционному движению на
Востоке, вольет в него дух бодрости и веру в победу.
Немалую поддержку окажут делу революционизирования Востока сами империалисты с
их новыми аннексиями, втягивающими в борьбу с империализмом новые страны и
расширяющими базу мировой революции.
Задача коммунистов – вмешаться в дело нарастающего стихийного движения на
Востоке и развить его дальше, до сознательной борьбы с империализмом.
В этом [в источнике: атом] смысле резолюция недавно состоявшейся конференции
мусульм ан-коммуни стов[36] об усилении пропаганды в странах Востока, в Персии,
Индии, Китае, – имеет, несомненно, глубокое революционное значение.
Будем надеяться, что наши мусульманские товарищи приведут в исполнение свое в
высокой степени важное решение.
Ибо нужно раз навсегда усвоить ту истину, что, кто хочет торжества социализма,
тот не может забыть о Востоке.

En el momento de ascendente movimiento revolucionario en Europa, cuando se desmoronan los viejos tronos y coronas, cediendo lugar a los Soviets revolucionarios de obreros y soldados, y cuando las regiones ocupadas arrojan de sus territorios a los testaferros del imperialismo, es natural que todos fijen sus miradas en el Occidente. Allí, en el Occidente, ante todo, deben ser rotas las cadenas del imperialismo, que, forjadas en Europa, asfixian al mundo entero. Allí en el Occidente, ante todo, debe brotar, pujante una vida nueva, la vida socialista. En tal momento desaparece “por sí mismo” del campo visual, se olvida el lejano Oriente, con sus centenares de millones de seres sojuzgados por el imperialismo. Sin embargo, no se debe olvidar el Oriente ni por un instante, aunque sólo sea porque sirve de reserva “inagotable” y de “segurísima” retaguardia al imperialismo mundial. Los imperialistas siempre han mirado al Oriente como a la base de su bienestar. Las inmensas riquezas naturales de los países del Oriente (algodón, petróleo, oro, carbón, minerales), ¿no han sido, acaso, la “manzana de la discordia” para los imperialistas de todos los países? A ello se debe, en rigor, que al combatir en Europa y divagar acerca del Occidente, los imperialistas no hayan dejado nunca de pensar en China, en la India, en Persia, en Egipto, en Marruecos, puesto que propiamente dicho, en todo momento se ha tratado del Oriente. A ello se debe, principalmente, el celo con que mantienen “el orden y la ley” en los países orientales, pues sin esto el imperialismo no tendría asegurada su retaguardia profunda. Pero los imperialistas no sólo necesitan las riquezas del Oriente. Necesitan el “dócil” “material humano” que tanto abunda en las colonias y semicolonias del Oriente. Necesitan la “tratable” y barata “mano de obra” de los pueblos de Oriente. Necesitan, además, los “dóciles” “muchachos” de los países orientales, entre los cuales reclutan las tropas llamadas “de color”, a las que no tardarán en utilizar contra “sus propios” obreros revolucionarios. Por eso llaman a los países orientales su reserva “inagotable”. Es tarea del comunismo romper el secular letargo de los pueblos oprimidos del Oriente, contagiar a los obreros y campesinos de eso países el espíritu liberador de la revolución, levantarlos a la lucha contra el imperialismo y privar, de tal modo, al imperialismo mundial de su “segurísima” retaguardia, de su reserva “inagotable”. Sin ello no se puede ni pensar en el triunfo definitivo del socialismo, en la victoria completa sobre el imperialismo. La revolución de Rusia ha sido la primera en levantar a los pueblos oprimidos del Oriente a la lucha contra el imperialismo. Los Soviets de Diputados en Persia, en la India, en China son un síntoma indudable de que el letargo secular de los obreros y campesinos del Oriente se aleja a la esfera del pasado. La revolución en el Occidente dará, sin duda, un nuevo impulso al movimiento revolucionario del Oriente, le dará bríos y fe en la victoria. No es escaso el apoyo que prestarán a la revolucionarización del Oriente los mismos imperialistas con sus nuevas anexiones, que hacen que se incorporen a la lucha contra el imperialismo nuevos países y se ensanche la base de la revolución mundial. Es tarea de los comunistas intervenir en el creciente movimiento espontáneo del Oriente y desarrollarlo hasta hacer de él una lucha consciente contra el imperialismo. En este sentido, la resolución de la reciente Conferencia de los comunistas musulmanes36 acerca de la intensificación de la propaganda en los países orientales, en Persia, en la India, en China, tiene, sin duda, profunda importancia revolucionaria. Abriguemos la esperanza de que nuestros camaradas musulmanes cumplirán su decisión, de tan alta importancia. Porque se debe comprender de una vez para siempre la verdad de que el que desee el triunfo del socialismo no debe olvidar al Oriente.
