NOTE TO V. I. LENIN FROM PETROGRAD BY DIRECT WIRE, June 18, 1919

Nota a V. I. Lenin, por hilo directo, desde Petrogrado
I consider it necessary to draw your attention to the following questions.
First. Kolchak is the most serious enemy, because he has sufficient space for retreat, sufficient man power for his army, and a rear abounding in food. Compared with Kolchak, General Rodzyanko is a mere gnat, because he has neither food in his rear, nor space for retreat, nor sufficient man power. The mobilization of twenty age classes, to which he is now compelled to resort in his two or three uyezds owing to lack of man power, will mean the end of him, since the peasants cannot stand mobilization on such a scale and are bound to turn away from him. Consequently, under no circumstances should forces be withdrawn from the Eastern Front for the Petrograd Front in such numbers as might compel us to halt our offensive on the Eastern Front. In order to force Rodzyanko back to the Estland frontier (there is no point in our going any further) one division will be sufficient, and its removal will not involve halting the offensive on the Eastern Front. Please give this your special attention.

Second. We have unearthed a big conspiracy in the Kronstadt area. The battery commanders of all the forts in the entire Kronstadt fortified area are implicated. The aim of the conspiracy was to seize possession of the fortress, take control of the fleet, open fire on the rear of our troops, and clear the road to Petrograd for Rodzyanko. The relevant documents have fallen into our hands. It is now clear to me why Rodzyanko, with his relatively small forces, advanced so brazenly on Petrograd. The insolence of the Finns is now also understandable. Understandable, too, are the wholesale desertions of our combat officers. So is the strange fact that at the moment of the betrayal of Krasnaya Gorka the British warships vanished from the scene; the British, obviously, considered that direct interference on their part (intervention!) would not be “convenient,” and preferred to turn up after the fortress and the fleet had fallen into the hands of the Whites, with the object of “helping the Russian people” to establish a new, “democratic system.” Obviously, Rodzyanko and Yudenich (to the latter can be traced all the threads of the conspiracy, which was financed by Britain through the Italian, Swiss and Danish embassies) based their whole scheme on the expectation of a successful issue of the conspiracy, which, I hope, we have nipped in the bud (all persons implicated have been arrested and the investigation is proceeding). My request: make no relaxations in regard to the arrested embassy officials, keep them in strict confinement until the completion of the investigation, which is revealing a host of new threads.
I shall give you a more detailed account within three or four days, by which time I hope to come to Moscow for a day, if you have no objection.
I am sending the map. I could not do so until now simply because I was away all the time on front-line business, mostly at the front itself.

Считаю необходимым обратить Ваше внимание на следующие вопросы.
Первое. Колчак является наиболее серьезным противником, ибо у него достаточно
пространства для отступления, достаточно людского материала для армии, богатый
хлебом тыл. По сравнению с Колчаком генерал Родзянко представляет муху, ибо у
него нет ни хлеба в тылу, ни пространства для отступления, ни достаточного
людского материала. Мобилизация двадцати возрастов, которую он вынужден теперь
проводить в своих двух-трех уездах ввиду недостатка людского материала, призвана
превратиться в его могилу, так как крестьяне не выдержат такую мобилизацию и они
неминуемо отвернутся от Родзянко. Поэтому ни в коем случае не следует брать с
Востфронта такое количество войск для Петроградского фронта, которое могло бы
вынудить нас приостановить наступление на Востфронте. Для того, чтобы прижать
Родзянко к эстляндской границе (дальше нам незачем идти), достаточно одной
дивизии, взятие которой не сопряжено с приостановкой наступления на Востфронте.
Прошу обратить на это особое внимание.
Второе. В районе Кронштадта открыт крупный заговор. Замешаны начальники батарей
всех фортов всего укрепленного кронштадтского района. Цель заговора – взять в
свои руки крепость, подчинить флот, открыть огонь в тыл нашим войскам и
прочистить Родзянко путь в Питер. У нас имеются в руках соответствующие
документы.
Теперь для меня ясно то нахальство, с которым шел Родзянко на Питер сравнительно
небольшими силами. Понятна также наглость финнов. Понятны повальные перебежки
наших строевых офицеров. Понятно также то странное явление, что в момент измены
Красной Горки английские суда исчезли куда-то: англичане, очевидно, не считали
“удобным” прямо вмешаться в дело (интервенция!), предпочитая явиться потом,
после перехода крепости и флота в руки белых, с целью “помочь русскому народу”
наладить новый “демократический строй”.
Очевидно, что вся затея Родзянко и Юденича (у которого сходятся все нити
заговора, финансируемого Англией через итальянско-швейцарско-датское посольства)
базировалась на удачном исходе заговора, надеюсь, задушенного нами в зародыше
(все замешанные арестованы, следствие продолжается).
Моя просьба: не делать никаких послаблений арестованным чинам посольств, держать
их при строгом режиме до момента окончания следствия, открывающего новые богатые
нити.
Подробнее расскажу через дня три-четыре, когда я думаю приехать в Москву на
день, если Вы не возражаете.
Шлю карту. До сих пор не мог прислать просто потому, что все время был в отлучке
по делам фронта, чаще всего на фронте.

Considero necesario llamar su atención acerca de las siguientes cuestiones. Primero. Kolchak es el enemigo más serio, pues tiene bastante espacio para retroceder, bastante material humano para el ejército y una retaguardia rica en cereales. En comparación con Kolchak, el general Rodzianko es una mosca, porque no tiene ni cereales en la retaguardia, ni espacio para retroceder, ni suficiente material humano. La movilización de veinte quintas, que por esta última causa tiene que realizar ahora en sus dos o tres distritos, está llamada a ser su tumba, pues los campesinos no podrán soportar tal movilización y volverán irremisiblemente la espalda a Rodzianko. Por eso no se debe, de ninguna de las maneras, sacar del Frente del Este para el Frente de Petrogrado un número de unidades que pueda obligamos a detener la ofensiva en el Frente del Este. Para rechazar a Rodzianko hasta la frontera de Estlandia (no tenemos por qué ir más allá), basta con sacar una división, cosa que no implicaría la detención de la ofensiva en el Frente del Este. Le ruego que preste a lo dicho, particular atención. Segundo. Se ha descubierto un vasto complot en la zona de Cronstadt. Están complicados en él los jefes de batería de todos los fuertes del sector fortificado de Cronstadt. El objetivo del complot era apoderarse de la fortaleza, hacerse con la flota, abrir fuego contra la retaguardia de nuestras tropas y despejar a Rodzianko el camino de Petrogrado. Los documentos correspondientes obran en nuestro poder. Ahora comprendo por qué Rodzianko avanzaba con tanta desfachatez sobre Petrogrado con fuerzas relativamente pequeñas. También se comprende la insolencia de los finlandeses. Se comprende la deserción en masa de nuestros oficiales con mando. Se comprende también el extraño hecho de que los buques ingleses desapareciesen con rumbo desconocido en el momento en que se producía la traición de Krásnaia Gorka; por lo visto, los ingleses no estimaban “conveniente” mezclarse de manera directa en el asunto (¡intervención!) y preferían presentarse luego, una vez que la fortaleza y la flota estuviesen en manos de los blancos, para “ayudar al pueblo ruso” a organizar el nuevo “régimen democrático”. Es evidente que Rodzianko y Yudénich (a este último llevan todos los hilos del complot, financiado por Inglaterra a través de las embajadas italiana, suiza y danesa) basaban todo su plan en el éxito del complot, que, así lo espero, hemos aplastado en germen (todos los complicados han sido detenidos y la investigación continúa). Ruego que no se guarden miramientos con los empleados de las embajadas detenidos y se les mantenga rigurosamente confinados hasta el fin de la investigación, que está descubriendo numerosos hilos nuevos. Le daré más detalles dentro de tres o cuatro días, pues pienso ir a Moscú por veinticuatro horas, si usted no tiene nada que oponer a este viaje. Le envío el mapa. No he podido hacerlo antes, porque todo el tiempo he estado fuera, ocupado en asuntos relacionados con el frente, en la mayoría de los casos en el frente mismo.
