In his interview with the members of the editorial board, Comrade Stalin, dealing with the tasks of the magazine, said: The chief task the magazine should set itself is to encourage the proletarian non-Party students to take an active part in the work of the Soviet Government and of the Communist Party. The magazine will accomplish this only when it becomes a real Soviet students’ magazine. There are still, of course, a number of defects in the work of higher educational institutions, organs of the People’s Commissariat of Education, etc. The students, who know these defects better than anybody else, should systematically expose and criticise them, point them out, so that by common effort we may improve our work. It is therefore necessary, on a wide scale, to encourage the best of the non-Party proletarian students to write for the magazine. The students must feel that it is their own magazine, a means of facilitating their work and development.
Referring to the tasks of some of the departments of the magazine, Comrade Stalin pointed out: The political departments of the magazine should deal only with the major questions of the work of the Party and the Soviet Government. There is no need to duplicate other magazines. Every organ of the press in our Union ought to have its own definite place in the general work. The departments: “Student Life,” “Literature,” and “Science and Technology,” should be considerably enlarged. Those are the departments in which the students themselves can take an active part and show what they can do. It is also necessary to get the students, as well as lecturers and professors, to elaborate various problems in the department: “Reform of Higher Education.”
If the magazine acts in keeping with the slogan “closer to the students,” it will be better able to perform its function and really become the Soviet students’ own organ.

В беседе с членами редакции товарищ Сталин, останавливаясь на задачах журнала, заявил следующее:
Журнал должен своей основной задачей поставить привлечение пролетарского
беспартийного студенчества к работе Советской власти и коммунистической партии.
Этого журнал достигнет лишь тогда, когда он на деле станет настоящим советским
студенческим журналом. Работа в вузах, органах Наркомпроса и пр., конечно, имеет
еще ряд недостатков. Студенчество, лучше чем кто-либо другой, знающее эти
недостатки, должно их систематически вскрывать, критиковать, указывать на них,
чтобы мы могли общими силами улучшать нашу работу. Необходимо поэтому широкое
привлечение к участию в журнале лучших людей из беспартийного пролетарского
студенчества. Студенчество должно почувствовать, что это его родной журнал,
помогающий ему работать и развиваться.
Касаясь задач некоторых отделов журнала, товарищ Сталин отметил следующее:
В политических отделах журнала необходимо освещать лишь основные вопросы работы
партии и Советской власти. Незачем здесь дублировать другие журналы. Каждый
печатный орган в нашем Союзе должен иметь свое определенное место в общей
работе. Большое развитие должны получить отделы: “Студенческая жизнь”,
“Литературный”, “Наука и техника”. Именно те отделы, где студенчество само может
активно участвовать и проявлять себя. В отделе “Реформа Высшей школы” также
необходимо наряду с преподавателями и профессурой привлекать студенчество к
разработке отдельных вопросов.
Осуществляя лозунг – “Ближе к студенчеству” – журнал лучше выполнит свою задачу
и действительно станет родным органом советского студенчества.

En una conversación con los miembros de la redacción, el camarada Stalin, deteniéndose en las tareas de la revista, ha declarado lo siguiente: La revista debe plantearse como principal tarea la incorporación de los estudiantes proletarios sin- partido a la labor del Poder Soviético y del Partido Comunista, cosa que sólo podrá conseguir cuando llegue a ser realmente una verdadera revista estudiantil soviética. En el trabajo de los centros de enseñanza superior, de los organismos del Comisariado del Pueblo de Instrucción Pública, etc., hay todavía, naturalmente, algunas deficiencias. Los estudiantes, que conocen esas deficiencias mejor que nadie, deben ponerlas de manifiesto, criticarlas y señalarlas sistemáticamente, para que con los esfuerzos de todos podamos mejorar nuestra labor. Es necesario, por ello, hacer que colaboren ampliamente en la revista los mejores estudiantes proletarios sin-partido. Los estudiantes deben sentir que la revista es una revista suya, que les ayuda a trabajar y a desarrollarse. Respecto a las tareas de algunas secciones de la revista, el camarada Stalin ha señalado lo siguiente: Las secciones políticas de la revista deben tratar únicamente los problemas fundamentales de la labor del Partido y del Poder Soviético. No hay por qué repetir en ellas lo que publican otras revistas. Cada órgano de prensa de nuestro país debe tener su puesto concreto en el trabajo general. Deben ampliarse considerablemente las secciones “Vida estudiantil”, “Literatura” y “Ciencia y técnica”, es decir, las secciones en las que los estudiantes pueden participar de lleno y mostrar lo que valen. En la sección “Reforma de la Escuela Superior” hay que hacer que los estudiantes participen al lado del personal docente en el estudio de algunas cuestiones. Cumpliendo la consigna de “Más cerca de los estudiantes”, es como mejor podrá realizar la revista su misión y convertirse efectivamente en el verdadero órgano de los estudiantes soviéticos.
