Dear Comrade Editor,
Please insert the following statement in your newspaper. On August 14 the New York quasi-socialist weekly The New Leader printed, without indicating the source, falsified concluding remarks from an alleged speech of mine, also falsified, at a plenum of the C.C., C.P.S.U.(B.). I have neither the possibility nor the desire to read all the inventions of the bourgeois and semi-bourgeois newspapers concerning Soviet public men, and would not have paid attention to this latest falsehood of the press of the capitalists and their underlings. However, a month after printing these falsified remarks The New Leader sent me a telegram in which it requested me to “confirm all July severe criticism of Zinoviev attributed to you in American newspaper reports of proceedings of Central Committee Russian Communist Party.” Not considering it possible to enter into correspondence with an organ which itself fraudulently falsified “remarks” from my speech, and now has the audacity to ask me, with an air of innocence, about the genuineness of these “remarks,” I ask you to allow me to state through your newspaper that the report on the “remarks of Stalin,” published in The New Leader of August 14, 1926, has absolutely nothing in common with my speech at the plenum of the Central Committee, C.P.S.U.(B.), whether in content, form or tone, and that this report is thus a complete and ignorant falsification. 14 августа в нью-йоркском квазисоц иалистич еском еженедел ьнике “Нью Лидер”[75]
были помещены без всякого указания источников поддельные заключительные
замечания из будто бы моей, тоже поддельной, речи на пленуме ЦК ВКП(б).
Я не имею возможности и охоты читать все измышления буржуазных и полубуржуазных
газет о советских деятелях и не обратил бы внимания на эту очередную ложь прессы
капиталистов и их прислужников.
Однако через месяц после напечатания этих поддельных замечаний “Нью Лидер”
прислал мне телеграмму, в которой просит меня “подтвердить всю июльскую суровую
критику Зиновьева, приписываемую Вам в отчетах американских газет о заседаниях
ЦК РКП”.
Не считая возможным вступать в переписку с органом печати, который сам же
мошеннически подделал “замечания” из моей речи, а теперь берет на себя смелость
с невинным видом запрашивать меня о подлинности “замечаний”, прошу Вашего
разрешения заявить через Вашу газету, что помещенный в “Нью Лидер” от 14 августа
1926 года отчет о “замечаниях Сталина” не имеет абсолютно ничего общего с моей
речью на пленуме ЦК ВКП(б) ни по содержанию, ни по форме, ни по тону, что отчет
этот представляет, таким образом, сплошную и безграмотную подделку.

Estimado camarada director: Le ruego que publique en su periódico la siguiente aclaración. El 14 de agosto, el “New Leader”73, semanario neoyorkino cuasi socialista, publicó, sin indicar las fuentes, unas observaciones finales, falseadas, de un supuesto discurso mío, también falseado, en un Pleno del C.C. del P.C.(b) de la U.R.S.S. No tengo la posibilidad ni el deseo de leer todas las supercherías de los periódicos burgueses y semiburgueses sobre los dirigentes soviéticos, y no hubiera prestado atención a este embuste de turno de la prensa de los capitalistas y de sus servidores. Sin embargo, al mes de publicar estas observaciones falseadas, el “New Leader” me envió un telegrama rogándome “que confirme toda la rigurosa crítica de julio a Zinóviev, adjudicada a usted en las referencias de los periódicos norteamericanos sobe las reuniones del C.C. del P.C. de Rusia”. Por no considerar posible entablar correspondencia con un órgano de prensa que ha falseado de un modo fraudulento las “observaciones” de mi discurso que ahora tiene la osadía de preguntarme con aire inocente si las “observaciones” son auténticas, le ruego que me permita declarar, por intermedio del periódico que usted dirige, que la información sobre las “observaciones de Stalin”, publicada en el “New Leader” del 14 de agosto de 1926, no tiene absolutamente nada que ver con mi discurso en el Pleno del C.C. del P.C.(b) de la U.R.S.S. ni por el fondo, ni por la forma, ni por el tono, y que, por lo tanto, la referida información es, de la primera a la última línea, una burda falsificación.
