I have received Comrade Russova’s article on Comrade Mikulina’s pamphlet (Emulation of the Masses). Here are my observations:
1) Comrade Russova’s review gives the impression of being too one-sided and biassed. I am prepared to grant that there is no such person as the spinner Bardina, and that there is no spinning shed in Zaryadye. I am also prepared to grant that the Zaryadye mills are “cleaned once a week.” It can be admitted that Comrade Mikulina was perhaps misled by one of her informants and was guilty of a number of gross inaccuracies, which, of course, is blameworthy and unpardonable. But is that the point? Is the value of the pamphlet determined by individual details, and not by its general trend? A famous author of our time, Comrade Sholokhov, commits a number of very gross errors in his Quiet Flows the Don and says things which are positively untrue about Syrtsov, Podtyolkov, Krivoshlykov and others; but does it follow from this that Quiet Flows the Don is no good at all and deserves to be withdrawn from sale?
What is the merit of Comrade Mikulina’s pamphlet? It is that it popularises the idea of emulation and infects the reader with the spirit of emulation. That is what matters, and not a few individual mistakes. 2) It is possible that, because of my foreword to Comrade Mikulina’s pamphlet, the critics expected too much of it and thought it must be something out of the ordinary, and being disappointed in their expectations they decided to punish its author. But that is wrong and unfair. Of course, Comrade Mikulina’s pamphlet is not a scientific work. It is an account of the emulation deeds of the masses, of the practice of emulation. Nothing more. Comrade Mikulina is not to blame if my foreword gave rise to an exaggerated opinion about her—actually very modest—pamphlet. That is no reason for punishing the author or the readers of the pamphlet on that account, by withdrawing it from sale. Only works of a non-Soviet trend, only anti-Party and anti-proletarian works may be withdrawn from sale. There is nothing anti-Party or anti-Soviet in Comrade Mikulina’s pamphlet. 3) Comrade Russova is particularly incensed with Comrade Mikulina for having “misled Comrade Stalin.” One cannot but appreciate the concern shown by Comrade Russova for Comrade Stalin. But it does not seem to me that there is any call for it.
In the first place, it is not so easy to “mislead Comrade Stalin.” Secondly, I do not in the least repent having furnished a foreword to an inconsiderable pamphlet by a person unknown in the literary world, because I think that, notwithstanding its individual and, perhaps, gross mistakes, Comrade Mikulina’s pamphlet will be of great value to the masses of the workers.
Thirdly, I am emphatically opposed to supplying forewords only to pamphlets and books by the “bigwigs” of the literary world, by literary “lights,” “coryphees” and so on. I think it is high time for us to abandon this aristocratic habit of giving prominence to literary “bigwigs,” who are prominent enough as it is, and from whose “greatness” young literary forces have to suffer, writers who are known to none and ignored by all.
We have hundreds and thousands of young and capable people who are striving with might and main to rise to the surface and contribute their mite to the common treasury of our work of construction. But their efforts are often unavailing, because they are very often kept down by the vanity of the literary “lights,” by the bureaucracy and callousness of some of our organisations, and, lastly, by the envy (which has not yet evolved into emulation) of men and women of their own generation. One of our tasks is to break down this blank wall and to give scope to the young forces, whose name is legion. My foreword to an inconsiderable pamphlet by an author unknown in the literary world is an attempt to take a step towards-accomplishing this task. I shall in the future, too, provide forewords only to simple and unassuming pamphlets by simple and unknown authors belonging to the younger forces. It is possible that this procedure may not be to the liking of some of the snobs. But what do I care? I have no fondness for snobs anyhow. . . . 4) I think that the Ivanovo-Voznesensk comrades would do well to call Comrade Mikulina to IvanovoVoznesensk and give her a “rap on the knuckles” for the errors she has committed. I am by no means opposed to having Comrade Mikulina properly taken to task in the press for her errors. But I am decidedly opposed to having this undeniably capable authoress done to death and buried.
As to withdrawing Comrade Mikulina’s pamphlet from sale, in my opinion that wild idea should be left “without sequel.”

Заметку т. Руссовой о брошюре т. Микулиной (“Соревнование масс”) получил. Мои
замечания на этот счет:
1) Рецензия т. Руссовой производит впечатление слишком односторонней и
пристрастной заметки. Я допускаю, что прядилки Бардиной нет в природе и в
Зарядье нет прядильной. Допускаю также, что Зарядьевская фабрика “убирается
еженедельно”. Можно признать, что т. Микулина, может быть, будучи введена в
заблуждение кем-либо из рассказчиков, допустила ряд грубых неточностей, и это,
конечно, нехорошо и непростительно. Но разве в этом дело? Разве ценность брошюры
определяется отдельными частностями, а не ее общим направлением? Знаменитый
писатель нашего времени тов. Шолохов допустил в своем “Тихом Доне” ряд грубейших
ошибок и прямо неверных сведений насчет Сырцова, Подтёлкова, Кривошлыкова и др.,
но разве из этого следует, что “Тихий Дон” – никуда негодная вещь, заслуживающая
изъятия из продажи?
В чем состоит достоинство брошюры т. Микулиной? В том, что она популяризирует
идею соревнования и заражает читателя духом соревнования. В этом суть, а не в
отдельных частных ошибках.
2) Возможно, что в связи с моим предисловием к брошюре т. Микулиной критики
ждали от этой брошюры слишком многого и чего-то необыкновенного и теперь,
разочаровавшись в своих ожиданиях, решили наказать за это автора брошюры. Но это
неправильно и несправедливо. Брошюра т. Микулиной, конечно, не является научным
произведением. Брошюра т. Микулиной есть рассказ о делах соревнования масс, о
практике соревнования. И только. Не вина т. Микулиной, если мое предисловие
создало слишком преувеличенное мнение об ее, по сути дела очень скромной,
брошюрке. Нельзя за это наказывать автора брошюры, а также читателей брошюры,
изъятием брошюры из продажи. Изымать из продажи можно лишь произведения не
советского направления, произведения антипартийные, антипролетарские. Ничего
антипартийного и несоветского в брошюре т. Микулиной нет.
3) Т. Руссова особенно возмущена тем, что т. Микулина “ввела в заблуждение тов.
Сталина”. Нельзя не ценить заботу о тов. Сталине, проявленную в данном случае т.
Руссовой. Но она, эта забота, мне кажется, не вызывается необходимостью.
Во-первых, не так-то легко “вводить в заблуждение тов. Сталина”.
Во-вторых, я нисколько не каюсь в том, что предпослал предисловие к
незначительной брошюре неизвестного в литературном мире человека, ибо я думаю,
что брошюра т. Микулиной, несмотря на ее отдельные и, может быть, грубые ошибки,
принесет рабочим массам большую пользу.
В-третьих, я решительно против того, чтобы давать предисловия только к брошюрам
и книгам литературных “вельмож”, литературных “имен”, “корифеев” и т. п. Я
думаю, что нам пора отрешиться от этой барской привычки выдвигать и без того
выдвинутых литературных “вельмож”, от “величия” которых стоном стонут наши
молодые, никому не известные и всеми забытые литературные силы.
У нас имеются сотни и тысячи молодых способных людей, которые всеми силами
стараются пробиться снизу вверх, для того, чтобы внести свою лепту в общую
сокровищницу нашего строительства. Но их попытки часто остаются тщетными, так
как их сплошь и рядом заглушают самомнение литературных “имен”, бюрократизм и
бездушие некоторых наших организаций, наконец, зависть (которая еще не перешла в
соревнование) сверстников и сверстниц. Одна из наших задач состоит в том, чтобы
пробить эту глухую стену и дать выход молодым силам, имя которым легион. Мое
предисловие к незначительной брошюре неизвестного в литературном мире автора
является попыткой сделать шаг в сторону разрешения этой задачи. Я и впредь буду
давать предисловия только к простым и не кричащим брошюрам простых и неизвестных
авторов из молодых сил. Возможно, что кой-кому из чинопочитателей не понравится
подобная манера. Но какое мне до этого дело? Я вообще не любитель
чинопочитателей...
4) Я думаю, что следовало бы товарищам иваново-вознесенцам призвать т. Микулину
в Иваново-Вознесенск и “надрать ей уши” за те ошибки, которые она допустила. Я
отнюдь не против того, чтобы пробрали хорошенько в прессе т. Микулину за ее
ошибки. Но я решительно против того, чтобы толкнуть ко дну и поставить крест над
этой безусловно способной писательницей.
Что касается изъятия брошюры т. Микулиной из продажи, то эту дикую мысль
следовало бы, по-моему, оставить “без последствий”.

Camarada Kon: He recibido el suelto de la camarada Rússova acerca del folleto de la camarada Mikúlina (“La emulación de las masas”). Mis observaciones al particular: 1) La nota crítica de la camarada Rússova produce la impresión de ser demasiado unilateral y apasionada. Admito que la hiladora Bárdina no exista y que en Zariadie no haya hilandería. Admito también que en la fábrica de Zariadie “se hace limpieza semanalmente”. Puede admitirse asimismo que la camarada Mikúlina, inducida acaso al error por alguno de sus informantes, haya incurrido en varias inexactitudes graves, cosa que, claro, está mal y es imperdonable. Pero ¿acaso lo importante es eso? ¿Acaso el valor del folleto se mide por algunas cuestiones de detalle, y no por su orientación general? El camarada Shólojov, famoso escritor de nuestros tiempos, incurrió, en “El Don apacible”, en varios errores de bulto y dijo cosas completamente inexactas acerca de Sirtsov, Podtiólkov, Krivoshlíkov, etc.; pero, ¿se deduce, acaso, de ello que “El Don apacible” sea una obra sin ningún valor digna de ser retirada de la venta? ¿Cuál es el mérito del folleto de la camarada Mikúlina? Que populariza la idea de la emulación y contagia al lector el espíritu de la emulación. Ahí está lo esencial, y no en ciertos errores de detalle. 2) Es posible que, influidos por mi prólogo al folleto de la camarada Mikúlina, los críticos esperasen de él demasiado, algo extraordinario, y ahora, al sentirse defraudados, hayan decidido castigar a la autora. Pero eso no es correcto ni justo. Claro que el folleto de la camarada Mikúlina no es una obra científica. Es un relato acerca de la emulación de las masas, de la emulación en la práctica. Nada más. La camarada Mikúlina no tiene la culpa de que el prólogo mío anticipase una impresión desmesurada de su trabajo, que, en realidad, es un folleto muy modesto. No se debe castigar por ello ni a la autora ni a los lectores, retirando el folleto de la venta. Esto únicamente puede hacerse con una obra de orientación antisoviética, con una obra antipartido, antiproletaria. Y en el folleto de la camarada Mikúlina no hay nada contra el Partido y que no sea soviético. 3) Irrita sobre todo a la camarada Rússova que la camarada Mikúlina “haya inducido a error al camarada Stalin”. No se puede por menos de estimar la preocupación que por el camarada Stalin manifiesta en este caso la camarada Rússova. Pero me parece que no es necesaria. Primero, que no es tan fácil “inducir a error al camarada Stalin”. Segundo, que no me arrepiento lo más mínimo de haber escrito el prólogo de un folleto insignificante de una persona desconocida en el mundo literario, pues opino que el folleto de la camarada Mikúlina, con todos sus errores de detalle, puede que de bulto, será muy útil para las masas obreras. Tercero, que me manifiesto enérgicamente en contra de escribir prólogos sólo para los folletos y libros de los “grandes dignatarios” de la literatura, para los “nombres” literarios, para los “consagrados”, etc. Me parece que es ya hora de que abandonemos esa señorial costumbre de presentar a los “grandes dignatarios” de la literatura, que no necesitan presentación, y cuya “grandeza” hace gemir a nuestros jóvenes literatos, por nadie conocidos y de todos olvidados. Hay cientos y miles de jóvenes capaces, que ponen todas sus energías en abrirse paso y quieren subir para hacer su aporte al tesoro general de nuestra edificación. Pero sus intentos son a menudo infructuosos, pues constantemente los acallan la presunción de los “nombres” literarios, el burocratismo, la insensibilidad de ciertas organizaciones nuestras y, finalmente, la envidia (que no ha pasado aún a la emulación) de sus coetáneos de ambos sexos. Una de nuestras tareas consiste en abrir brecha en ese recio muro para dar salida a las fuerzas jóvenes, que son legión. Mi prólogo a un folleto insignificante de una autora desconocida en el mundo literario es una tentativa en el cumplimiento de esta tarea. Y en adelante seguiré prologando solamente los folletos sencillos y nada sensacionales de jóvenes autores sencillos y desconocidos. Es posible que este proceder no agrade a ciertos admiradores de las figuras consagradas, pero ¿qué le vamos a hacer? No me atraen en absoluto los admiradores de las figuras consagradas...

4) Opino que los camaradas de Ivánovo- Voznesensk deberían llamar a la camarada Mikúlina a su ciudad y “tirarle de las orejas” por los errores cometidos. No soy, ni mucho menos, contrario a que se critique bien en la prensa los errores de la camarada Mikúlina. Pero me manifiesto enérgicamente en contra de que se hunda y se niegue a esta escritora, capaz sin duda alguna. En cuanto a eso de retirar de la venta el folleto de la camarada Mikúlina, a mi entender se debería dejar “sin consecuencias” esta absurda idea. Con saludos comunistas J. Stalin. 9 de julio de 1929.
