Your note is full of misunderstandings. My report at the Fifteenth Party Conference speaks of the “unity between the interests of industrialisation (i.e., of the proletariat) and the interests of the main mass of the labouring sections of the population.” It says there that our method of industrialisation, i.e., the socialist method of industrialisation, “leads not to the impoverishment of the vast masses, but to an improvement of their living standards, not to an aggravation of the internal contradictions, but to the latter being evened out and overcome.”11 Hence it is a matter here of the bond between the working class and the main mass of the working people, particularly the main mass of the peasantry. Hence it is a matter of the contradictions within the bond, which will be evened out and overcome satisfactorily as industrialisation increases, that is, as the strength and influence of the country’s proletariat grows.
That is the matter dealt with in my report. But you, having forgotten all this, argue about the contradictions between the proletariat and the kulaks, that is contradictions that lie outside the scope of the bond and will grow and become more acute until we eliminate the kulaks as a class. It follows that you have confused two different things. You have confused the contradictions between the proletariat and the main mass of the working people with the contradictions between the proletariat and the kulaks.
Is that clear? I think it is.

1. In your first letter you played with the word “contradictions” and lumped together contradictions outside the bond (that is contradictions between the proletarian dictatorship and the capitalist elements of the country) and those within the bond (that is contradictions between the proletariat and the main mass of the peasantry). You could have avoided this, for a Marxist impermissible, game if you had taken the trouble to understand the basic causes of the disputes between the Party and the Trotskyists. The Trotskyists told us:
a) You will not cope with the contradictions between the middle peasants and the working class; they are bound to fall out and the bond will be abolished unless a victorious world revolution renders timely assistance;

b) You will not overcome the capitalist elements, you will not completely build socialism by your own efforts and a Thermidor will be inevitable unless a victorious world revolution renders timely assistance. On both these questions the Trotskyists, as we know, were defeated. But you had no desire to reflect on our disputes with the Trotskyists. In my reply I was therefore compelled to expose your playing with the word “contradictions” and said that it was impermissible to lump together two series of dissimilar contradictions. And what was your reply to this?
2. Instead of honestly acknowledging your mistake, you “diplomatically” evaded the question and passed on from playing with the word “contradictions” to playing with the words “inner contradictions,” lumping together contradictions within the bond and contradictions within the country, contradictions between the proletarian dictatorship and capitalism. That is, you are “imperceptibly” repeating your former mistake, with a mere change in its form. I shall not conceal the fact that lumping together two dissimilar contradictions and “diplomatically” slurring over this question is a very characteristic feature of the Trotskyist-Zinovievist way of thinking. I did not think that you were infected with this disease. Now I have to think about this as well. As I cannot tell what further play you will indulge in and am terribly overburdened with current affairs so that I have no time left for play, I must bid you farewell, Comrade Ch. J. Stalin

En mi informe ante la XV Conferencia del Partido se habla de la “unidad de los intereses de la industrialización (es decir, del proletariado) y de los intereses de las masas fundamentales de los sectores trabajadores de la población”. Se dice allí que nuestro método de industrialización, es decir, el método socialista de industrialización, “no conduce a la depauperación de las grandes masas, sino al mejoramiento de la situación material de estas masas; no conduce a la agudización de las contradicciones internas, sino a su amortiguamiento y solución”11. Por consiguiente, se trata de la alianza entre la clase obrera y las masas fundamentales de los trabajadores y, ante todo, las masas fundamentales del campesinado. Por consiguiente, se trata de las contradicciones en el seno de la alianza, contradicciones que se amortiguarán y resolverán favorablemente conforme se desarrolle la industrialización, es decir, conforme aumenten las fuerzas y la influencia del proletariado en el país. De eso se trata en mi informe. Y usted, olvidándose de todo esto, habla de las contradicciones entre el proletariado y los kulaks, es decir, de contradicciones fuera de la alianza, contradicciones que aumentarán y se agudizarán en tanto no liquidemos a los kulaks como clase. Resulta que usted ha confundido dos cosas distintas. Ha confundido las contradicciones entre el proletariado y las masas fundamentales trabajadoras con las contradicciones entre el proletariado y los kulaks. ¿Está claro? Me parece que sí. En su primera carta, usted jugaba con la palabra “contradicciones” y metía en un mismo saco las contradicciones fuera de la alianza (es decir, las contradicciones entre la dictadura del proletariado y los elementos capitalistas del país) y las contradicciones en el seno de la alianza (es decir, las contradicciones entre el proletariado y las masas campesinas fundamentales). Se podría haber ahorrado este juego inadmisible en un marxista si se hubiese tomado el trabajo de comprender la base de las discusiones del Partido con los trotskistas. Los trotskistas nos decían: a) vosotros no resolveréis las contradicciones entre el campesino medio y la clase obrera; el campesino medio y la clase obrera se pelearán necesariamente, y la alianza desaparecerá si no llega a tiempo la ayuda de la revolución mundial triunfante; b) vosotros no venceréis a los elementos capitalistas, no coronaréis la edificación del socialismo con vuestras propias fuerzas, y el termidor será inevitable si no llega a tiempo la ayuda de la revolución mundial triunfante. Como se sabe, los trotskistas fueron derrotados en estas dos cuestiones. Pero usted no ha querido reflexionar sobre nuestras disputas con los trotskistas. Por eso me vi obligado en mi respuesta a poner al desnudo su juego con la palabra “contradicciones” y le advertí que no se puede meter en un mismo saco dos series de contradicciones heterogéneas. ¿Cuál ha sido su contestación? 2. En lugar de reconocer honradamente su error, usted elude “diplomáticamente” el asunto y ya no juega con la palabra “contradicciones”, sino con las palabras “contradicciones internas”, metiendo en un mismo saco las contradicciones en el interior de la alianza y las contradicciones en el interior del país, las contradicciones entre la dictadura del proletariado y el capitalismo. Es decir, usted vuelve “inadvertidamente” a su error, modificando sólo la forma. No ocultaré que el meter en un mismo saco dos contradicciones heterogéneas y el disimular “diplomáticamente” las cuestiones son el rasgo más característico del proceso discursivo trotskista- zinovievista. No le creía contagiado de esa dolencia. Ahora habrá que pensar también en ello. Como no se sabe a qué nuevo juego va usted a recurrir, y yo estoy endiabladamente ocupado con los asuntos cotidianos, por cuya razón no tengo tiempo para jugar, permítame despedirme de usted, camarada Ch.
