Order of the Day, October 25, 1944 Order of the Day, addressed to Army-General Meretskov, announces that troops of the Karelian Front, pursuing the German troops, have crossed the State frontier of Norway and under difficult Arctic conditions, on October 25, captured the town of Kirkenes, an important port on the Barents Sea.
The Order mentions 74 commanders of troops, sailors, artillerymen, tankmen, airmen, sappers and signallers whose units and formations have distinguished themselves. A salute of 20 salvoes was fired from 224 Moscow guns.
